Hi, Anonymous the starter drive/Bendix/clutch is a mechanical gear driven component that engages the clutch pack ring gear to turn over the engine. It has an internal mechanism that allows the gear to turn in one direction and once the engine starts allows the drive gear to free spin. If gear free spins in both directions then the drive gear has failed it is not serviceable and needs to be replaced. The kill switch may be mis adjusted. Sometimes the cable stretches and you need to adjust it or shorten the cable.

How to change flywheel on bg86c stihl blower

  1. Remove fan housing
  2. Remove spark plug and install piston stop.
  3. Remove flywheel nut.
  4. If flywheel is struck on use a puller. Stihl uses a knocker type puller that screw on the crankshaft and tapped by a hammer. Be carefully not the damage the crankshaft stud or the bearing.
  5. To install reverse the above skipping item 4. Just make the flywheel engages the slot in the crankshalf. The flywheel nut is torque to 17 nM or 150 in lbs. Don't over torque the nut or damage will occur to the flywheel.

Backfire thru exaust on a 2004 kx 250

remove stator cover and flywheel (puller required), verify crankshaft key is not sheered, and stator plate is in its proper position. There is no timing mark on that flywheel because it is irrelevant and not needed.
This is most likely not a flywheel timing issue but a CDI timing issue. The CDI timing is governed by the TPS switch on the carburetor telling the CDI when to change timing maps and curves. If the carburetor is dirty and you cranked up the idle to run off the main circuit instead of the proper idle circuit this can happen. Or you have an improperly set, or failed TPS switch on the carb.

How do you get the flywheel off of a ms170stihl powersaw

You need a puller to pull the flywheel off the taper on the crankshaft. The puller has two arms that fit over the sides of the flywheel and are joined to a bar that has a threaded bolt running through the centre. It is called a bearing puller. Make sure the hooks that engage behind the flywheel go behind the two 'thicker areas of the flywheel and not behind the air fins. Wind the centre bolt of the puller into the end of the crankshaft until tight then with a bit more pressure the flywheel should come off the taper.

1965 mustang starter fires but won't engage flywheel. it is a brand new starter

Doesn't matter. The forks inside the starter may be missing or broke off or bad spring in starter that pushes the gear out. Try new started. Starter may have to be shimmed to make contact with flywheel. Starter may be kicking out but not engaging flywheel.

Tecumseh OV691EA engine Carb spits, crankshaft stops when cylinders fire. Compression L-95 R-110

When you say crankshaft stops when cylinders fire I am assuming this is during start. This is caused by a flywheel key problem (Partially sheared) A flywheel key will partially shear if there was a sudden stoppage of the engine. I e. you hit something that stopped the blades right away.

Service manual is here:
http://www.mymowerparts.com/pdf/Tecumseh_Service_and_Repair_Manuals/TECUMSEH_SERVICE%20_REPAIR_MANUAL_V_TWIN_ENGINE_696325.PDF

Flywheel removal is on page 44 of the file.

I am pretty sure you have a flywheel key problem as this appears to be an engine timing problem and it is firing too soon. (again partially sheared flywheel key causes timing to advance. If there is not a problem with the flywheel key the next suspect would be the mechanical compression release.

A note about flyweel key replacement. Most of them are aluminum or soft metal so that the crankshaft does not shear off with a sudden engine stoppage. Just make sure to use a Tecumseh
replacement flywheel key and not one from an auto parts store.

Will not shift into 5th while underway. Will shift into 5th while not powered, by rocking bike back and forth while moving shift lever.

You have a bent shift fork not engaging the slider gear fully into 5th gear. The engine will need to come out of the bike. Remove the top end, the flywheel and electrics, the clutch, shift mechanism and kick starter and a few other parts. THEN you are ready to split the gearbox to get to the crankshaft, gears and shift forks.

You will need an impact driver, flywheel puller, case splitter, torque wrench and factory service manual, plus the normal screwdriver, pliers, etc.. Alternate to the special tools is taking it to the dealer and say "Fix it". I normally tell people to take it to the shop just so they don't get into such an involved project and they have a knowing eye working on the engine.

Please rate this solution. Thanks

Unlikely! Crankshafts dont generally 'go'. Most likely is the starter solonoid is not firing and engaging the starter into the flywheel. Take the starter off and try operating it alone. Equally check that the cam belt hasnt snapped/shredded.
