Incorrect engine coolant temperature sensor data

The engine coolant sensor dosn"t work. I bought the scooter wiht this problem. Tell please what to do?

Check engine light on ? The coolant temp sensor is a input to the PCM - engine computer ! All wires come from an go to the PCM . What type of problem are you having ? Maybe able to save you some aggravation an time chasing gremlins . Coolant gauge not working ?
Engine Coolant Temperature Gage
The instrument panel cluster (IPC) displays the engine coolant temperature as determined by the powertrain control module (PCM) or the engine control module (ECM). The IPC receives a serial data message from the PCM/ECM indicating the engine coolant temperature. The engine coolant temperature gage defaults to 100°F (38°C) if there is a malfunction in the engine coolant temperature sensor or the IPC detects a loss of serial data communication with the PCM/ECM.

Does the 98 Ford F-150 5.4 triton have two coolant sending units? I found the one on the intake and replaced it and still no gauge.


Has CHT - cylinder head temp. sensor . This sensor is a input to the PCM - engine computer . The PCM sends engine temp info on serial data network to the instrument cluster . I/C has a microprocessor inside . Have it check for DTC'S - diagnostic trouble codes . Not OBD2 codes , B - body codes . The gauge could be the problem , which means replacing the instrument cluster .
Engine coolant temperature information is received by the instrument cluster from the PCM over the SCP network. Temperatures over 121°C (275°F) will display hot (H). If the engine coolant temperature data is missing or invalid for five seconds, the instrument cluster will move the engine coolant temperature gauge below the cold (C) position.
The best way to diagnose this is with a scan tool , factory or a professional type . Know how the system works and not replacing parts is the proper way to diagnose .

  • A single gauge does not return to zero with the ignition switch off
  • Instrument cluster.
  • INSTALL a new instrument cluster; REFER to Instrument Cluster . TEST the system for normal operation.

I should also point out that if the temp sensor were bad the vehicle may not run right .
Using the factory scan tool
Trigger instrument cluster active command ENGCOOLNT. Monitor the engine coolant temperature gauge while adjusting the ENGCOOLNT active command to read 50% and 100%.

Yes REFER to the Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis (PC/ED) manual.

No INSTALL a new instrument cluster; REFER to Instrument Cluster . REPAIR the circuit. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
Your best bet , take it to a qualified repair shop !

Temp guage not working 1999 alero


One advantage us dealer tech's have over a week end warrior is that we have factory service repair information and have factory scan tool ,Tech 2 , to check data coming into the instrument cluster . Most of you probably don't even think about how that coolant temp infor shows up on the gauge , except by a coolant sensor !

High Temperature Indicator
The high temperature Indicator function handles the control of the Engine Temperature Gauge Display and the red High Temperature indicator. The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) reads the Coolant Temperature Sensor, filters the messages, and sends the coolant temperature to the instrument cluster via a Class 2 serial data message. The PCM monitors the coolant sensor in order to determine a fault. The PCM transmits the Class 2 serial data coolant temperature report messages to the instrument cluster for the temperature gauge display and for the high temperature indicator control.
The instrument cluster receives the engine temperature data in the Class 2 serial data message from the PCM. The instrument cluster converts this data into a temperature gauge pointer position which drives the gauge pointer. The instrument cluster also uses this data in order to determine the high temperature indicator control.
The Body Control Module (BCM) looks for the high temperature indicator Class 2 serial data report from the instrument cluster and triggers a chime when the indicator is ON.

Your best bet , take it to a qualified repair shop , rather then just replacing parts .

Hi Janice , Before I say where the coolant temp. sensor is I'd just like to make you aware of a couple of thing's before you replace this sensor needlessly .It's one thing if you have a DTC diagnostic trouble code for the sensor but another if your temp. gauge isn't work ! You see the coolant temp. sensor is an input to the engine computer , not directly to the temp. gauge.
The instrument panel cluster (IPC) displays the engine coolant temperature as determined by the engine control module (ECM). The IPC receives a serial data message from the ECM indicating the engine coolant temperature. The engine coolant temperature gage defaults to 100°F (40°C) or below if: ?€¢

What would be the cause of sudden Intermittent engine overheat?


The gauge in the instrument cluster could be going bad ! maybe. Is that what your going by ? You need to have it hooked up to a scan tool ,not a code reader . It will tell what the ECT - engine coolant temperature sensor is reporting to the PCM - engine computer .The PCM turns on the cooling fans when the temp. reaches 262 degrees ! Are the cooling fans coming on ? Thermostat sticking ! Go to harbor freight an buy a Laser Temp Gun Infrared Thermometer , $30.00 . point it at the upper radiator hose an see what the actual temp is !

Temp sensor fault ,will tell brains to slow engine as it believes the engine is overheating . Check sensor or sensor wiring , coolant level ok .

What is code P0125


P0125 = low engine temperature, engine not reaches its temperature after start up.
need to check the engine thermostat, intake air and coolant temperature sensor and or dirty coolant causing incorrect reading of coolant temperature sensor.

You need to diagnose to find out what is CAUSING the coolant error. I cannot tell you what is causing it without diagnosis being performed and although many uneducated peope may try to "guess", neither can they tell you for with any certainty. Diagnosis begins with many questions that must be answered:

> Is the engine running too hot?
> Is the engine running too cold?
> Is there a malfunction in the engine coolant temperature sensor circuits?
> Is the data from the sensor within its designed parameters?
> Is the sensor providing the correct temperature reading to the computer? Or if not, is the reading too high or too low?
> Is the thermostat opening at the correct temperature?
> Etc. Etc..

P0128 code on 2006 ford escape, solutions?


Diagnostic Test Code (DTC) P0128 has a generic description of "Coolant Temperature Below Thermostat Regulating Temperature".

The Poertrain Control Module (PCM) checks the coolant temperature at startup. It then calculates the period of time that it should take for the engine to reach operating temperature (or thermostat regulated temperature). After the calculated period of time, the PCM again checks the coolant temperature. If it has not reached operating temperature, a code P0128 flag is set in mode 6.

If the engine still has not reached operating temperature after 5 more minutes of continuous engine operation, code P0128 is set in continuous memory and the Check Engine (or Malfunction Indicator Light "MIL" is turned on.

Possible causes:

> A stuck-open engine coolant thermostat (MOST common)
> A skewed Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) or Cylinder Head Temperature(CHT) sensor (working, but not reading correct temperature)
> Low engine coolant level (causing the sensor to not read correctly)

First, the engine coolant (antifreeze) level should be checked. If it is low, it is recommended to perform a cooling system pressure test to find out WHY.

Then, the actual engine temperature should be measured with an infrared thermometer near the ECT or CHT. The reading from the thermometer should be checked against the live sensor data with a scan tool. (PLease note that MOST generic OBD code readers CANNOT perform this function.)

If the reading from the thermometer and the sensor data is within 10 degrees F of each other, replace the thermostat. Otherwise, the sensor circuit should be checked for high resistance (loose or corroded connector, damagd wire, etc.). If no high resistance is measured in the rest of the circuit, the sensor should be replaced.
