Broken wire at neutral switch on 1983flh

I see the wire dangling but not sure where it would connect to if i ground the wire the light works

Hi Anonymous, the nuetral switch still probably has the connector still on it just remove it and solder it back on to the wire. If the connector is missing the Harley part number is 9905. Good luck

Hi there,
I'm not sure how your set-up is, but I can definitely walk you through it. To simplify it on my end. Let's start with the neutral (white wire) wire first - and to be honest with you, this ISN'T always true out in the field, especially in homes (residential wiring). But, let's assume this has been verified. And before I start, make sure the power is OFF. Now, you want to take this neutral (white) wire to both fixture's only. The neutral (white) wire does NOT go to the switch. After you hook up the neutral wire to the one fan - then connect this to the second fan. They should be connected together (in series with each other). Okay, now that we have the neutral (white) wire connected, and out of the want to connect the other wire on the fixture (most likely black) to the other fixture's wire (black) - and take this down to the switch. So now, you have both fixture's hooked up - with only the black (which will be called the switch leg) going down to the switch. Then, you'll need to find your constant HOT wire (which might also be black) - and take that directly to the switch. So now, the HOT wire brings the electricity down to the switch. When the switch is turned on - then the switch leg (black) wire will send the electricity up to the light/fan. Once the light/fan is in operation - that means the neutral (white) wire - has received the electricity (load), and taken it back to the electrical panel...completing the circuit. THIS, is how it all works. The HOT wire leaves the circuit breaker, and goes directly to the switch. Once the switch is turned on, then it travels up the SWITCH LEG to the fixture. Assuming the switch on the light/fan is ON - which is what you want when working it off of a switch - then, the NEUTRAL wire takes the electricity (load) back to the electrical panel...Completing the circuit! Also, the ground wire's should've been hooked up first - but if there's no grounding available (which happens a lot in homes (residential applications), then don't worry about it. It's a good practice to have all appliances, etc. grounded. You can get a grounding clamp, and ground it to the cold water pipe on your water heater - then run it into the ceiling, and to your light(s). This is for added protection! It will trip the circuit breaker if there's any short in the circuit. I hope I didn't get to complicated here, but feel free to contact me with any further question's. Installed new florescent lightning and lights stay on when switch is off. What is wrong ?

What kind of switch?
Does switch turn off Hot wire according to code... or is switch wired wrong and turn off neutral wire instead?
Identify Hot wire inside switch box, and make sure Hot is connected to switch:

Is the light grounded?
If light is not grounded, it might not work right.
If there is a small short to ground , light may not work as expected.
Test hot wire to ground with multimeter?

Wont start engine wont turn all lights come on and horn works what could be the problem?

possible causes wiring,battery coonection-poor,starter motor,starter relay,seized engine and or broken component,bad connection and or ground problem,make sure it is properly in park,safety neutral switch is also a possibility.

Replacing one thee way switch with a three way switch and an outlet. the switch works fine but the outlet only works when the switch is off.

Switch is wired wrong.
But not sure how it's wired

Copy following link for wiring 5245 combo 3-way switch outlet.
Also look at illustration just below that shows no-neutral.

You replaced old 3-way switch.
Wire that connected to dark screw on old switch, connects to dark screw on 5245.
Wires that connected to other two screws on old switch, connect to 2 brass-colored screws on 5245.
Neutral wire must connect to silver screw on 5245.

I have downloaded instruction manual for 1755 rocker switch
This is ordinary triple-rocker-switch to control 3 different loads.
It is like having 3 single pole switches and each switch controls a separate light (Load)
This is single pole switch for 120Volt, and not suited necessarily for 240Volt loads.
Switch is not for 3-way application as typically found in hallway where 2 switches control same light.

1) You have 4 wires.
Electricians don't guess, they test.
There are 4 types of wires in 120Volt and 240V household wiring: Hot wire, Neutral wire, Load wire, and ground wire.
Load wire means the wire that connects to switch and goes to Light, fan, motor (load)
Hot wire always connects to one side of switch.
Neutral never connects to switch.
Load wires connect to side of switch opposite Hot wire.
Bare copper ground wire connects to any green ground screw.

2) One-and-only-one wire in each 120Volt electrical box is Hot. (assuming you are not replacing
3-way switch or working with 240V)

3) Separate all 4 wires for testing. Tape tester leads to wood sticks. Turn power ON.
Test each wire to bare ground wire. Tester will light up on Hot wire.

4) Hot is identified. Next, find the neutral wire if it is among the 4 wires.
Test Hot wire to all other wires in box, except bare ground wire.
Tester will light up on neutral wire.
Tester will not light up on Load wires.

5) NOT EVERY switch box has a neutral. Or the neutral wires can be twisted together and covered with wire nut and pushed to back of box.
The neutral may be up in the light fixture. Neutral located in ceiling box is typical with bathroom fan-light-heater combos.
If neutral is not one of the 4 wires, then don't worry about the neutral connection because it will already be wired together.

6) Image of 1755 switch shows 1 screw terminal on the Hot side, so connect Hot wire to this single screw.
Other side of switch has 3 screws for connecting each of 3 Load wires.
Note: Neutral wire is NEVER connected to a switch.

7) Since I cannot see wiring project or know what loads or how the testing comes out, I suggest connect the Hot wire to single screw terminal.
And then connect 1 of the other wires to other side of switch. Not a neutral.
Turn power ON, and try switch.
Process of elimination might yield result.

You are installing a combo device with switch and outlet.
The outlet is tamper resistant so a child cannot stick a key into outlet and get shocked.
For the outlet to work, a 2-prong plug must be inserted.

Wiring the device:
Electricians don't guess, they test.
Device has different colored screws: dark, silver and brass.

Separate wires for testing.
Do not unwind wires that are twisted together.
White wires that are twisted together and located in back of box are included in testing.
Use ordinary 2-lead tester.
Tape tester leads to wood sticks to keep hands away from power.
Turn power ON.

Test each wire to bare ground wire.
Tester lights up on Hot wire. This wire connects to dark screw.

Hot is identified.
Test Hot wire to all other wires, except bare ground wire.
Tester lights up on Neutral wire. Neutral connects to silver screw.
If you do not have a Neutral wire, then outlet will not work for that location.
You can get the outlet to work by connecting bare ground to silver screw, but that is violation of code.

Last wire goes to Load (light, fan, motor).
Load wire connects to brass screw.
In your case, this is red wire.

I have a combination single pole switch. Light switch and receptacle. In have running in the old box 2 white, 2 black and a ground. How do I install the new switch to have power to the light switch and...

You are replacing old switch-receptacle device.
New device also has switch and receptacle.
You want switch to control light, but not receptacle.
You want receptacle 'hot' all the time.

You have 2 cables that enter box.
Each cable has white, black and ground wires.
Ground wires are twisted together and attached to green ground screws and not discussed more.

Screws on new device:
Side 1 of device: New device has dark screw(s) or brass screws on one side ... these screws are connected together by brass plate. This side is the Hot side of device.

Side 2 of device: Other side has 2 separate and unconnected screws. These screws are not connected in any way. Each of the 2 disconnected screws sits opposite the switch and opposite the plug.

One cable comes from breaker box. This cable has a Hot and Neutral wire. The Hot is black. Neutral is white.
The other cable goes to Load (light). Black supplies power to Load (light), and white connects to Neutral.
If you are uncertain which is which, testing is shown below.

Connect the device:
Side 1 of device: Black Hot goes to dark colored screw(s) that are connected by brass plate. (This is only wire connected to this side of device)
Side 2 of device: Black that goes to Load (light) connects to screw that sits opposite the switch.
Side 2 of device: White Neutral connects to screw that sits opposite the plug

One wire is left .. the white from light. This white wire connects to white Neutral wire. Since white neutral is already connected to device, look on back of device to see if there is a quick-connect hole for you to shove wire into back of device. If device doesn't have quick-connect, then twist white wires together, and add a short jumper wire to device, and then all the whites are connected to neutral. Circuit is complete.

How to test for Hot and Neutral
Separate wires.
Turn on power.
Test each wire to bare ground.
Tester lights up on hot wire.
Now test hot wire to other wires.
Tester lights up on neutral

New switch GE model 15265 ... to light up 2 lightbulbs outside. Old switch all cables are black. Those who light up the tester are the hot=Red/black?? Those which do not light up are white?? Green I know...

Manual for GE 15265
15A timer works fine on two bulbs, up to 1440 total watts.

If old switch has 2 screws plus green ground screw, then timer is right.
If old switch has 3 screws plus green ground screw, 15265 doesn't replace 3-way switch.

Timer-green wire connects to bare ground wire

Old switch has 2 screws with wires on each.
One wire is Hot-from breaker and this connects to timer-black wire.
One wire Goes-to-lights and this connects to timer-red wire.
If you get these two wires reversed, timer will not work, so reverse them.
It will not blow circuit if the timer-red and timer-black wires are reversed.

Timer-White wire is the confusing wire for everybody:
Timer-white wire runs clock motor located inside timer.
In back of electric box are neutral white wires that are twisted together and covered with wire nut.
Connect timer-white to these neutral wires.
If box does not have neutral white wires, connect timer-white to bare ground wire.

Black goes to Hot wire from breaker box
Red wire goes to Load (light, fan, motor)
White wire goes to Neutral
Green to bare copper ground wire

Your original switch had 2 wires plus bare ground.
One of these wires is Hot, the other goes to Load.
You said original wires are Red and Black

How do you find Hot wire?
-Your original switch had 2 wires.
-Remove timer from box.
-Pull original 2 wires out where you can test them
-Turn on power
-Use regular tester
-Tape tester leads to wood sticks so your hands stay away from voltage
-Power is on
-Test each original wire to bare ground wire
-When tester lights up, that is Hot wire ... this wire connects to Black wire on timer
- The other wire goes to Load so it connects to Red wire on timer

How to test for Neutral wire
Test Hot wire to your white wires - No need to untwist them.
When tester lights up, that is Neutral
White wire from timer connects to Neutral.
Green goes to ground wire.

How to reset timer
I'm not sure which timer you have. Probably GE 15086. Reset is small round button below HOUR button. Use paper clip and push-in reset until timer flashes 12 o'clock.

I have a new chandelier with 9 12 volt halogen bulbs. I want to install an electronic dimmer switch for it. When purchasing the dimmer switch there are 4 wires included: ground, black, white and neutral....

First you must have a neutral wire in the switch box for this dimmer to work. A neutral wire (white) is a current carrying conductor. A ground wire is an equipment ground and does not normally carry current. You should never connect a device that requires a neutral to a grounding conductor.
The neutral wouldn't have to come from the light fixture as long as it's on the same circuit. Another note is to check your light fixture, and be sure dimming is ok. Another choice you could have is to install a remote dimming device. You would mount this in the fixture canopy, and then use a remote dimmer.
