The brake light on my Honda motorcycle is not working from front brake handle, how do I fix this?

The brake light switch for the front brake is pressure-actuated. Is the reservoir low or empty?
Also, check to verify that the connector has not corroded, preventing the flow of current.

Hi Anonymous, this problem is usually cause by the front brake light switch being out of alignment or the button not retracting all the way keeping your brake light on in a closed circuit, depending on your model year. 1996 and earlier models the right handlebar switch housing had to be tight up against the front brake control housing in order for the front brake light switch button to be fully compressed to stop continuity. In 1997 and later models the button was alot shorter and was more of an alignment issue in the switch housing. Rear brake light switches located in the rear brake line TEE can also fail in the closed circuit condition but extremely rare, usually they fail in an open circuit condition where the brake light is not able to activate. Rear brake light will not work when brake pedal is applied, both front and rear brakes run through same sensor front brake applies rear light, but rear brake pedal doesnt. where is the problem?

It sounds like the rear brake pressure switch is bad. The wires for the front brake light switch are wired in parallel to the this switch. Replace the pressure switch in the metal brake line coming from the rear brake master cylinder going to the rear brake caliper.

Good Luck

No rear brakes, pedal goes all the way down and brake lights don't work, but they work off the fronts

You need to check you rear brake master cylinder. Something is wrong with this as your rear brake is not working. The brake light for the rear brake is activated by a pressure switch whereas your front brake light is activated by an normal push/release switch. Fix your rear brake problem and the brake light problem will be repaired as well.

It may be time to rebuild your rear brake master cylinder.

87 CBR600 the front brake does not turn on the brake light

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Initially, check the:
  • front brake light switch at the end of the front brake lever;
  • presence of IGN +12 on the black/brown wire going to the front brake switch coming from the fuse box;
  • presence of brake +12 on the black wire after the switch before the connector, brake +12 on the green/yellow wire after the connector going to the brake bulb socket.

The above assumes that the foot brake light switch works to light the brake bulb and that the brake bulb have been tested good.

Good luck and thank you for asking FixYa.

Check the wiring connections to the front brake switch. If all OK, then it could be the switch.
