Battery charged enough? Alternator o.k.?
Bad idling should mean bad carburation -> is there a manual setting for the carburators? Look at the colour of the spark plug, inside the engine. Black=too rich engine. Mediumbrown=good. Light brown=too poor (in fuel) the mix. Oh, you should start with the idling screw, so the idling is a bit faster at first. Is the fuel flowing freely? fuel filters o.k.? Air filter too?
While engine is turned off.Screw shut both fuel and air mixture.Then each screw turn open 2 and half turn or some times 2 full turns.that should give close enough mixture .then switch engine on and make sure idle at 10rpm for auto and 6 rpm for manual.Then adjust screws lightly to your needs constant check rear exhaust for color of smoke if black it\'s too rich in fuel and if it\'s a farting noise coming out of the exhaust it\'s too lean.The sound out of the exhaust should be running continues and no missing.
Hi ok i am assuming you stripped the phillips heads and connot turn the screws to take them off. 2 ways to loosen them 1 mini set of locking pliers or get a small metal punch and a small ball peen hammer try and secure the carb so it wont be damaged and take the punch mak sure the tip is sharp enough on the outside edge of the head of the screw make indentation and hit it in the counter clockwise direction it will come loose then screw it the rest of the way out replace them with new screws when you put it back together.
If its an old Homelite you should have 3 screw on the carburator.
First bigger screw for adjust idle on the butterfly.
The 2 other for the mixture. One screw is ''L'' for low rpm mixture an other screw is ''H'' for high rpm mixture.
First the idle screw. It should just open a little bit the carburator butterfly.
Second full close both ''L'' and ''H'' screws (turn clockwise).
After open both ''L'' and ''H'' screws 1/2 to 3/4 turn (conterclockwise)
Normally the saw should start. Tune the ''L'' screw to have the motor running at idle if idle is to fast at this point is not important. After motor is running by itself at idle tune the ''H'' screw.
Full throttle tune the ''H'' screw to be able to pass from low rpm to high rpm with no lag.
Than at full throttle open again a little bit the ''H'' screw to make the high rmp mixture more rich.
Becarful if ''H'' screw is not adjust correctly the mixture will be to poor and motor damage can occur.
It may be necessary to re-tune a very little bit the ''L'' screw and idle screw after the correct setting of the ''H'' screw.
If it still not working carburator kit may be needed,
On some newer model there is no adjusting screws in this case see if a carburator kit is available for your model.
lean out the carb, you do this by letting the engine idle and turning the air/fuel mixture screw until the engine starts revving up(without turning the throttle) when it revs as high as it will go by turning the air/fuel mixture screw, then lower the idle with the idle adjust knob. as for oil, most of the major companies make a 10w30 for motorcycles. if you can afford it royal purple for motorcycles is the best, but i use castrol 4t for motorcycles its a 10w30
crack the mounting bolts on alt loose then tighten adjusting screw on tensioner i think its been a while since ive worked on one but thats the idea dont over tighten u want a little movement when u pull up n down on belt
