Like TellMe said no need to remove the motor but if i remember right the airbox is a git to get out without removing the carbs which isn't much help to you.
A big problem with older bikes is the carb to airbox rubbers go rock-hard. This is more of a problem when re-fitting the carbs but it helps to take out the filter and leave a hairdryer blowing hottish air through the box, this will temporarily soften the rubbers and help when pulling carbs out.Undo the manifold jubilee type clips, roll the springs off the airbox rubbers and pull the carbs back and upwards, this usually breaks the death-grip. Loosen the airbox mounting screws to gain another couple of millimetres to help too.
As for re-fitting, new inlet rubbers (carb to airbox) are the best way if you can still get them 'cos you will be driven mad else. If yours haven't hardened then 'tis a miracle and best of luck m8.
