I had the same problem until I found out that when you put the Burgman on it's center stand, it pushes a small round metal pin (spring loaded or something similar) that limits the Burgman to 1st gear only. Some kind of safety feature, I guess. You can see the little switch if you put the bike on it's side-stand, get down on the right hand of the bike and look where the centre stand meets with the body of the bike. My switch was stuck in permanent "on" so I just pulled the pin to it's full extention with a pair of pliars, then cut it with a junior hacksaw.

Try shorting out the 2 10mm nuts on the starter relay (has the lead from the battery and starter going to it) if the the engine turns over chech the relay or safety switches. It will flash so make sure the is no open fuel. If nothing happens try tapping the starter motor l(lightly) then try it. If this works the brushes in the starter are worn out..Dont keep on doing it as you will burn the comutator in the starter..Brushes are cheap.

SOURCE: My 2005 Suzuki Eiger 4x4
There is a slip ring type of switch within the gearbox housing that lets the ignition produce a spark.
Not the easiest thing to fix but a broken wire maybe the problem if you have no gear indication either.
Hope this helps.

SOURCE: My Harley davidson ultra classic has a zodiac products reverse gear fitted. I can't put the bike into reverse from neutral because it grinds the gears badly. I have to put the bike into first gear
It could be the clutch needs adjustment or the reverse syncro is not there or needs to be replaced. good luck.
