There are procedures for adjusting the idle mixture and speed.
I would start with those. Perhaps that resllve both the idle issue and the emissions issue. See procedures at the link below.

If the car still fails the test after there adjustments, please post the test results.

We've have the same problem with ours. We found the fuel canister needed replaces. It's mounted near the back bumper with straps. The part cost us about 125 bucks and was pretty easy to replace. The trick is to get the bolts out without snapping them.

Honda

If the smoke is black then you are running too rich, this is controlled by the computer, do you have a check engine light on? check your map/maff sensor and your o2 sensors. You may have injectors that are leaking causing excess fuel to pass. Also, try a tune up and check your air filter. Get back to me OK. Make sure ALL of the cylinders are firing correctly.

Check engine light on just after 100K

a check engine light has nothing to do with oil, it is a warning that some part of the engine or emission control system electronic control systems has developed a fault, have the system tested to determine what that fault is, there will be a fault code stored in the powertrain control modules memory

Check Engine light going on for a '98 Civic Hatchback

Well, go to Auto Zone and have them read the error code it is setting. They'll tell you what the issue is. Usually, if it's not running hot and the oil light is not coming one, you can drive it for a while. It could be something you need to have repaired, though, or it may cause more damage.

89 Honda Prelude failing emissions rich

is everything stock? and you have catalitic converter in place?

Stop by Schucks auto supply and have them run the codes. i'm sure there is a code if you cant pass emissions. your check engine light bulb is probably out.

and usually the first cause is the first o2 sensor.

Will not pass emissions test

the light is an emissions code in there sometimes its a oxygen sensor or the egr valve gets clogged in hondas...you need to retrieve the code to narrow the problem down

I have a 1990 honda civic hatchback si with an 89 ZC DOHC black top engine.. the rear motor mount is cracked and each time i down shift the engine raddles.. how do i change out the mount? and if possible.....

You will need something to lift the engine so that you can take the pressure off of the mount. It sounds like your fuel pump may be wearing out and it is not responding like it should...The pump on the gas tank should be located on the top of the tank....Under the back seat....

No start

check wiring at the starter, and also check fuses, sounds like something has shorted out.

WHAT'S A GOOD MOTOR

The Honda Civic engine is a representative engine among Japanese cars and is generally acceptable. Therefore, I don't think you need to modify it too much.

Engine stalls, check engine light, not fuel filter.

the white smoke as it stalls could be steam in the exhaust. This is caused by coolant leaking into cylinders from a leaking head gasket. You should check cylinder compression next with a compression tester.
