Hi, Anonymous and the usual suspects are:
1. Severely discharged or a damaged battery, should have 12.5 volts or better and be able to pass a load test if necessary.
2. Check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
3. Spark plugs in bad condition or partially fouled.
4. Spark plug cables in bad condition and leaking.
5. Spark plug gap too close or too wide.
6. Faulty ignition coil, module, and or sensor.
7. Loose, dirty, or corroded ignition module connector at crankcase.
8. Faulty CKP or CMP, MAP, ETS, ATS, TPS, O2 sensor.
9. Intake air leak.
10. Water, dirt, or rust in the fuel system, carburetor and/or filter.
11. Fuel tank vent system plugged or carburetor vent line closed off.
12. Vacuum line from intake manifold to fuel valve is broken, cracked, pinched, or missing.
13. Carburetor controls misadjusted.
14. Damaged carburetor.
15. Incorrect valve timing.
16. Weak or broken valve springs.
17. Damaged intake or exhaust valve.
18. Check for engine trouble codes

My 1996 Hyundai is only running on 3 cylinders how do I find out which cylinderits missing on?

I am curious, how do you know it's missing?

One way (safest way) is with a temperature read
er: with the engine running, aim the reader at each exhaust port. The missing cylinder will be colder than the others.

Another old-school way: (electrical shock hazard) with the engine running, pull the plug wire of each cylinder, either at the plug end or the other end, one at a time. The missing cylinder will be revealed when there is no change in the engine's sound.

My van turns over but will not crank

HUH??? I assume you mean to say that it "cranks, but will not start".
There are MANY things that can cause this. The first thing that SHOULD be done is to scan the engine control module for possible fault codes. This can greatly speed up the diagnosis process.

Other than that, the only thing I can tell you is that an internal combution piston engine needs four basic things (components) to make it run:
(1) Air-fuel ratio
(2) Volumetric efficiency
(3) Compression
(4) Ignition

If your engine will not start and run, it is because one of these components of basic engine operation is missing.

To get the engine running again, you must:
(A) Determine which of the basic components is/are missing
(B) Perform diagnosis relative to the missing component(s) to identify the CAUSE of it/them being missing
(C) Perform repairs necessary to correct the CAUSE of the problem.

My 17 kw gen start up easy runs about 5 min and then start to miss, let it cool down and then restart and does the same thing.

hi it sounds like to me that you need to check your valve clearances. It sounds like as the engine warms up, the metal expands and the valves then do not close fully, hence the miss. The engine cools and the metal contracts, valve clearance is good, engine runs fine. Check the tolerances right before you start the engine, then after it starts to miss.

Engine misses/hesitates on low speeds. Runs fine

is the check engine light on? have you ever serviced the injectors? if not try that first because there are many things that give the symptoms you spoke of. but this is the cheapest.

97 k1500 5.7 liter vortec misses on cylinders 3 and 5 while idling. about 1500 rpm only cylinder 3 and 4 miss then at 2000 rpm only cylinder 4 and 8 miss. what could cause this?

I have had continuous missing issues on my 1997 Silverado after i had a new engine installed 30,000 miles ago. Today I purchased a new gasket for the EGR Valve and removed it. The mechanic had re-used the old gasket when he replaced the engine and cut corners to save $2.00. I found he had installed the EGR bass-ackwards causing my check engine light to stay on and the engine always to miss. Engine runs GREAT now

Engine miss above 2000 rpm

sounds like a valve problem. check compression running and non-running. valve sealing at higher rpm is usually a valve spring problem is if runs ok at idle.
