Hi Anonymous, take a 15 minute ride, let bike idle for 2 minutes and check oil level, drain or add as necessary to achieve full mark hot level. If you are still having problems, go to your local dealer and purchase part number 8873 check ball, 26262-80 spring, and 11105 o-ring. Then remove the the inboard cap on oil pump body with a large flat bade screw driver, use a pencil magnet to remove old spring and check ball, DO NOT USE!!!!! magnet on new ball. Install new parts and your good to go. Good luck

Shooting oil? Your engine is what we refer to as a "head breather". This is because the crankcase pressure is vented into the carburetor, by EPA requirements, through the two large hollow bolts on either side of the breather backing plate. They may be covered by rubber plugs but you can see them when you take the air filter off. Oil accumulation is normal but "shooting" is not. This would indicate a excessive buildup of oil in the rocker boxes and failure of the "umbrella valves" in the center section of the rocker box covers. I'd take the air filter cover off and clean it out thoroughly and see if it still did it. If so, you've got a problem with the crankcase venting system on the engine. Since I'm not that familiar with the Twin Cam engine, I'm reluctant to guess exactly what the problem is. In the older Evolution engines that I'm familiar with, I'd suspect the "breather gear" in the cam chest but I'm not sure the TC-88B engine uses this system. Sorry I can't be more specific.

good luck
Steve

I have a 91 heritage softtail thats been sitting 4 a couple of years.today i tryed to get it started as it cranks over im getting oil comming out of the carb???

Hi, Joe it's called "WET SUMPING" most Harley's with external oil pumps if left sitting for weeks or months will eventually let the oil tank contents drain pass the oil pump check ball and fill up the bottom end of the crankcase when the bike is started the excess oil will gush out of the breather vent and if routed to the air cleaner will also flood the filter. This messy condition will continue until the bottom end is forcibly emptied by the flywheels or manually drained if there is a plug. There are 3 options you may want to consider:
1. Drain the oil tank before storing the bike.
2. Replace check ball and resurface seat in the oil pump.
3. Install inline ball valve shut off in the feed line to the pump.

2000 FLSTC Heritage Softail Classic: 2001 heritage is blowing oil through breather.why?...

All Harleys after the year 1992 will have some engine oil carry over visible in the air cleaner though there is a diffrence between excessive and normal although if you get on your bike and travel down the highway at a constant 80+ MPH you will find that you get more carry over to the air cleaner then you would normally riding at lower speeds and this is simply cause you are running the engine harder and therefore you will see more carry over at the air cleaner. Now to be sure, make sure your bike is sitting on level pavement and in the case of a Softtail model it should also be upright and level pull the dipstick from the oil tank and wipe it clean, reinsert fully into the oil tank and remove it again and look to see if your oil level is roughly halfway between the check marks on the dipstick. If so then yes your oil level is good. I would now remove the air cleaner cover and wash any excess oil out of it and if your running a stock air filter and you have had a oil carry over issue for awhile now, then replace the air filter, reinstall the air cleaner cover and go ride the bike for around 50 miles and by ride the bike I mean go ride it like in town and on the highway without being abusive to it or excessive speeds(70 mph). Then remove your air cleaner cover again after your test ride and look to see if you have any oil carry over in the air cleaner. if so let me know and we can go into further detail.
