That indicates a too lean condition. Check the plugs; if they are almost white it confirms the lean condition.

SOURCE: backfire on deacceleration

Get the fueling set up on a rolling road. Honda set the fuelling to suit the Emissions and the Exhaust they fitted. An after market exhaust will usually have less backpressure and need a set up. When you say backfire, do you mean a great big bang or just a little popping sound from the exhaust? If it is the latter, it isn't a massive problem but a set up will cure it. A Big Bang could be a cause for concern as it means the ignition is taking place when the Exhaust valve is open and firing in the exhaust itself. This will give a drop in performance and may cause the engine and exhaust to fail.

Hi, Neil and the usual suspects are:
1. Shifter pawl improperly adjusted.
2. Shifter drum improperly adjusted or damaged.
3. Shifter engaging parts/dogs badly worn or rounded.
4. Shifter forks bent.
5. Damaged gears.

Why does it backfire on startup?

Hi Sammy:
I once had a bike with that problem.
We finally tracked it down to a bad needle valve in the carb.
While it was sitting, gas would get past the carb into the cylinder.
On first spin over, gas in the exhaust would ignite, giving the Gunshot "Hey are you awake yet?"
Try turning the fuel supply valve off when you're going to park it for a long time and see if the problem dis-appears.

What is the main course of the engine to stop on its own while driving ?

The backfiring can occur because the car isn't shut off properly. Remember when we were kids and we would shut off, coast in gear and then restart and pop the accumulated gases? That said I think your anti-jack may be switching randomly and shutting you down. I'd start there.

Backfire

one of the cylinders is missing. It doesn't fire sometimes and when it does, you get the backfire. Check the plugs. It should be obvious which cylinder is at fault.

1996 Volvo 960 has shifting problem. Took to Trans shop and they think something is wrong with motor. When shifting from 1 to 2 it seems like the tranny is slipping or dropping down then back up quick...

Check the catalytic converter. You can do this by banging on it and listen for a rattle. Sometimes, the inside gets melted into a little ball and blocks the exhaust from getting out on acceleration. This will cause a serious loss of power and feel like a trans malfunction.

Unknown problems with my xb9r

I am having some problems with my 2003 xb9r. It has race ecm exhaust and K&N and about 5500 miles on it. The problem is i am loosing low end power and loud backfire in airbox when down shifting exhust backfires when i let off the throttle. I just put in new spark plugs and changed all the oil and it didnt help. It seems it might be running too rich but i thought the ecm would fix it on its own. I was wondering if maybe i had to get it remapped or something... any ideas?Try to check the muffler packing.,,
