Question about 2002 Yamaha V-Max
Posted by Anonymous on
Hi, Anonymous I would love to help you with your engine or chassis noise but I just loaned my brand new pair of listening ears to your local dealer's chief technician so he could take your bike for a test ride and give you his professional opinion and estimate about your noise and repair cost. If you are a little short on "DRACHMA" and a Dealership is not on your list of fun places to visit then perhaps the list below will help soothe your worried mind so you can make an informed decision.
3. Brake Rotors---BUZZ
6. Shifting Trans---CLUNK
8. Front Forks---PLUNK
9. Rear Shocks---SQUEAK
11. Solid Lifters---TICK
12. Hydraulic Lifters---TAP
14. Connecting Rods Go---KNOCK-KNOCK---who's there, it's me "*****"

Check the gear oil level in the shaft drive and make sure it is the right level, and that you are using the proper type of oil (check your service manual).
However, I understand it's normal for these bikes to exhibit some gear noise at low speed due to the design of the transmission (straight-cut gears).

wouldnt be too concerned about that most biikes idle around the 1k mark my own included but if looking to reduce idle speed there is a a screw on the side of your engine like a flat head screw driver would fit into not sure which side to your engine but think it might be the right hand side ajust as needed when the engine is on but is idling fine

Hello and welcome to FixYa!
You may just have system failure. As a first course of action, I strongly suggest that you remove the positive battery connector and let it sit for atleast 5mins. before reconnecting it.
This will reset the electrical system in your bike then try to turn the idle screw if it will respond.
Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!
