I have an 82 maxim 750 I recently purchased used. the motor idles for a couple of minutes after starting but then revs up to abou 3 or 4 thousand rpms. I can put it in gear begin to ride and use the brake to pull the engine down to slow the rpms. But as soon as I use the throttle to speed up and then pull in the clutch to shift up the engine revs between shirts. If I use the brake to pull the engine down and then pull the clutch in without accelerating the motor will idle for a minute or so before reving again. Any suggestions
You have an air leak in the intake system. The fuel mix is getting lean from excess air mixing with the gas. New gaskets and seals between carb and head will usually take care of the problem. Any oil stains around the base of the cylinder head? Head gasket going bad.if there is. The gasket could be the leak. Time for a valve job? Air getting sucked in past an exhaust valve or two? Have the compression checked. Find the leak(s) and you find the fix.
Please rate this solution. Thanks!
I have same problem. On the back side ofthe carbs theres a round like screw it turns the idle down so you can shift but it wont idle so needs rejeted thats what i was told
I believe mr tombones is very correct. my gf has an 82 650 and basically the same prob. I am mechanically inclined and also had suspected an air(vacum) leak but checked here to see if there were any KNOWN failures of these bikes that caused the same symptom. I do think that the head gasket is not as likely as other vacum leaks unless there is a skipping condition while at even rpms (some odd mph steady, not accel or decellerating) however mr bones is correct, it could still be the problem. I am first going to chase a vacum or air leak by sight, if no luck there afterwards going to look at carb boots (between carb and head). One way i plan to do this is by using SMALL AMOUNTS!!!! of carb cleaner which will burn similar to gasoline in this engine, if the tube that comes with the can is connected to the sprayer, and only sprayed in suspected leak areas. If there is a leak or leaks at those points, the engine will rev higher at or just after the cleaner is applied. mind you if you are not an experienced mechanic you should not do this due to RISK OF FIRE!!!! If you choose to try this method make sure to use small amounts at each suspected leak point, blow away with compressd air or wipe away excess between suspected points. also beware that these bikes are older and if the spark plug wires are cracked, brittle or even seem fine, but are originals, they can and will ignite the carb cleaner in an instant!!!!! good luck to all if i find a good solution, ill re-post....
