Question about 2005 Harley Davidson FXDWG - FXDWGI Dyna Wide Glide

1 Answer

Fuel Leak It looks like it is coming out around the fuel gauge. Talking on the phone to the dealer and they think it is morelikely coming from under the center console, but there is not gas on the tank between the console and the fuel gauge. Just topped off the tank...but as I was cleaning last night this does not look to be the first time I have had the problem. Suspect it won't leak at lower fuel levels but don't know that for sure...yet. Anyone have similar problems, and what did you need to do to fix it?

ok, pulled the fuel gauge and there was gas all in there behind it, also running down th eelectrical connectino, through the tank, and dripping from underneath at a bend in the wire. Syphoned off some of th etank, pulled the center console. Dry as a bone in there. Fuel tank vent hose connected and looks fine. The sealed plate under there...nothing was wet, but there were some areas of the seal that looked inconsistant with the rest. Couple of the screws I could take up about 1/8th of a turn. All I can think to do next is take it to the pump with it all apart, fill it, and hope to see the leak...anyone with any ideas out there??

We own a 1995 c220 four door sedan with a few minor problems, there is an intermittent fuel leak somewhere around the gas tank for the last few months, it drops a fuel spot about the size of a coffee...

Since the car died on you, I would think it was coming from the fuel line around the fuel tank area. (rear of vehicle.) A little investigation under the car may reveal a corroded fuel line, leak at connection to the filter or tank. Could be as simple as tightening up a connection or replacing a section of line. Those would be relatively inexpensive repairs. Worst case is it is coming from a line on top of the fuel tank requiring removal for repair. (More expensive depending on what the shop charges for labor) Any competent mechanic should be able to track it down and repair it in the $100 range plus parts.
Thanks, Mike

On my 99 Voyager, 3.0, I have a leak in a pipe that comes from under the fuel injector housing. On the drivers side, the lower radiator hose and a heater hose connect to a pipe that leads to this pipe. The...

You will need a new pipe. You MAY get it out from the drivers side?? If not, you may have to take the intake manifold off. Job is on the line? so you are a mechanic? if not, pay a shop to replace it. I think the dealer is the only place to get a new pipe. I know the pipe you are talking about but never had to replace one.

First, go under the car and make sure that the sending wire from the tank is connected (It will be on top of the tank, look for it going up to the top, and jiggle any wires. If they come loose, bad sign.) Then, go check to see if any fuses are out/blown. You never know. Finally, take it in, and ask them to look at the dash. Make it certain that you will be standing behind them, watching to make sure it wasn't their fault.

po171 is a lean code, and could be likely caused by a plugged fuel filter, or a weak fuel pump, I would recommend changing the fuel filter first since its cheaper.. The filter is located under the rear of the vehicle by the fuel tank, if this doesn't help run, or have run a fuel pressure check to determine if that is the cause. Also look carefully under the hood for any hoses or lines disconnected causing a vacuum leak, this can also cause a lean code

Change your fuses your fusebox probably got wet when you had the water leak or if your unlucky it could be a problem with the cars computer but i think they are usually on the passenger side so probably not

2006 Chevy Trailblazer fuel gauge stays on empty

Could be a
1. Fuse - not likely, I'd expect other instrument panel problems.
2. Broken wire from fuel gauge
3. Bad fuel sender in fuel tank. Normally requires dropping the tank.

Vehicle is not that old, would think it is still under warranty?

2002 Ranger Edge 3.0 Flex fuel tranny??

This is not specific to a Ranger 3.0, but could apply to nearly any gasoline vehicle. 1) Start by eliminating fuel system issues. Run out all of the E-85 and fill with regular unleaded and a bottle of fuel injector cleaner. Check your fuel filter for blockages, and replace if needed. Check the pressure at the fuel injector rail, and yes you can use a tire pressure gauge, BUT WEAR EYE PROTECTION. 2) Check the vacuum lines for leaks. The easiest way to do this is take an UNLIT propane torch with the gas valve cracked slightly, and run it around the vacuum lines. If there is a leak, the engine will speed up. 3) If there are no leaks and your manifold vacuum is normal (buy a vacuum gauge, it comes in handy for diagnosing many problems and is pretty inexpensive), take it to a reputable transmission shop to have them change the filter and fluid, adjust the bands, and check the vacuum modulator. Manifold vacuum normally drops during acceleration, and if you have a vacuum leak or a defective vacuum modulator, your automatic transmission will not shift correctly. 4) If none of this works, push the piece of **** off the nearest cliff.

Fuel gauge erratic

Yes the tank has to come out. It really doesn't require any special tools. You should have everything you need at the ag dealer. Try to get as much fuel out of the tank before you start so it is easier to work with.

Fuel gauge stop working

Most likely your problem is the fuel sending unit in the fuel tank mounted with the fuel pump assy. The symptoms might let the gauge sit on or work intermittently then is goes to empty. DON'T let the dealer tell you its only replacable by changing the whole fuel assy.(400.00). This is not true. Look up your vehicle on the AC Delco web site at the top of the page click the link for part look up, it will ask you the year, style, eng size, etc. then you look at fuel , the part is actually called TBI Fuel Meter. If your truck is a 5.7 your part is #17113274 (around $100.00). This is a actual GM part number, some are the AC Delco part number that may have 2 letters and 4 digits, the dealer can cross reference it or order the AC Delco part. This kit comes with a new wiring harness, and instructions. Having said this the other symptom you may have is the gauge goes past full, this is because of a bad ground, most likely around fuel tank. I have replaced approx 6 of these sensors in GM vehicles( 2 of the same year and make as yours) in the last year, its cheap design lets it fail easily.
