The drain plug is on the left center engine casing, near the front of the case at the lowest point of the case. Warm up the engine, turn it off then drain the oil after removing the oil fill dipstick on the top of the casing. The bike should be resting on the side stand.

The filter is at the rear of the engine near the bottom. It unscrews by turning counter clockwise. Put a thin film of oil on the new filter rubber seal and threads. Tighten hand tight then 1/4 turn more, ( 22 foot pounds of torque ). Use a genuine Honda filter. Aftermarket filters are inferior and can cause the bike major damage if they fail. I have seen them collapse internally and plug up the oil flow. The engine is pretty much trash after this happens. Aftermarket filters are cheap for a reason.
Use 10w40 motor oil in the gear box. Don't use any synthetic oils, oil marked "EC", or oil with "special" additives. Up North use 20w40, down South use 20w50 motor oil. Stick with the major brands; Pennzoil, Quaker State, Mobil or Shell.

Go to the site below where you can see a parts diagram for your specific bike. You will select the actual brand, year, model, etc., once you go to the site. Part numbers and prices are also shown. You can order parts from this site. In the event no price is shown on a particular part, the part is not in stock.

How to check the oil on a 2005 VT 750 shadow oil stick level or kick stand

Hi, Anonymous many riders are over filling their oil system because they do not know how to properly read their oil site glass or dipstick. The following procedure works on nearly all 4 stroke engines but to be on the safe side you should refer to your owners manual. Use your center stand if you have one.
1. Bring the engine up to operating temperature or let idle for 5 minutes.
2. Turn off your engine and let it sit for 2 minutes, this will allow the oil from the top end to drain to the bottom.
3. Hold your bike straight up or on the center stand and wait 2 minutes for the oil in the bottom of the engine to be level in the sight glass or on the dipstick.
4. Your oil level should be between the top full mark and the bottom add mark.
5. Never over fill your oil system it will cause problems:
a. oil leaking out of exhaust pipes.
b. oil leaking out of breather pipe/hose.
c. oil carryover into the air cleaner.
6. Your oil site glass must "NEVER" be completely full or empty drain or add oil as necessary.
7. Your oil dipstick must "NEVER" be over the full mark and should never be below the add mark drain or add oil as needed.

Just purchased a 2004 Shadow Aero. No owners manual. What type oil do I use for oil change. How many qts does it take?

Use only a JASO MA certified motorcycle oil. 10w-40 for cold climate . 20w-50 for warm climate and touring. Do not use any oil that says Energy Conserving on the label , it will shorten the life of your wet clutch and transmission gears. Synthetic oil will help your bike run cooler and shift easier. you will need 4 quarts , an oil filter , and a drain plug washer. You will probably need 3.4 quarts. Drain the oil, pour in 3 quarts of oil, run the motor to fill the oil filter, check the dipstick or window with the bike on the center stand , and top up as needed.

What is the oil capacity on Honda shadow areo 1998, and can I use regular motor oil

You will need 4 quarts of oil. The correct amount is between 3.5 and 4 quarts. Use only JASO MA certified motorcycle oil. 10w-40 for cold climate 20w-50 for warm climate/touring. Do not use oil that is Energy Conserving it will shorten the life if your wet clutch and transmission gears(wrong additives). Synthetic oils will help your cycle run cooler and shift easier. Be sure to change your filter and purchase a spare drain bolt washer. A K&L filter wrench ($10) is also a useful tool if you plan to do your own oil changes.
