None that I can think of: the push rod it activates will stay in place unless you extract it. you will need to remove the shift pedal assembly, the middle gear cover and the left-side crankcase cover to get to it, but once those are out of the way, the slave cylinder is readily accessible. Remember to change both copper washers at the clutch hydraulic cable junction, reusing the old ones are sure to cause, at the very least, a slow hydraulic (DOT 4 brake fluid) leak.

Is the slave cylinder part of the clutch brake system


on some late model cars such as ford
the clutch slave cylinder is now inside the bell housing and there is no throw out lever
Basically the engineers thought this was a clever idea but unfortunately a simple slave cylinder change now requires a transmission removal and the slave cylinder has gone fro around $30.00 to around $200.00
They still leak and have the same problems as the external cylinders
there was never a clutch brake on small cars

Hi- 1995 jeep wrangler 2.5yj- clutch grinding won't go into gear - seems full of fluid but over filled it works good for a few months -does it again- repeated -works good-maybe master slave problem ?

yes, then either the slave or mc are bad.
sometimes both can fail, (rust happens inside and is progressive)
what I do , is this. (if not wanting to change out both)
1: look at the MC, if it done leak down either side of the fire wall
it might be good (dont mean the piston seals good but its not leaking, so if fluid drops , (every week say) the the MC is ok
and for sure the slave leaks.

2: so where is your slave. have you looked,? (swaps happen)
most leak and can not be detected as that leak landed on the road to work.
for sure its just 2 parts, here, you know the clutch is ok.
because it works with fluid in the system and bled.
now ILL PASTE THE FSM words out of a real factory service manual.
they are clear.
FSM words, QUOTE:
CLUTCH HYDRAULIC LINKAGE REMOVAL
The clutch master cylinder, slave cylinder
and connecting line are serviced as an assembly
only.
The linkage components cannot be
overhauled or serviced separately. The cylinders
and connecting line are sealed units. Also
note that removal/installation procedures for
right and left hand drive models are basically
the same. Only master cylinder location is different.
(1) Raise vehicle.
(2) Remove fasteners attaching slave cylinder to
clutch housing.
(3) Remove slave cylinder from clutch housing (Fig.
9).
(4) Disengage clutch fluid line from body clips.
(5) Lower vehicle.
(6) Verify that cap on clutch master cylinder reservoir
is tight. This is necessary to avoid undue spillage
during removal.
(7) Remove clutch master cylinder attaching nuts.
Note that one nut is accessible from engine compartment
and one nut is accessible from under instrument
panel (Figs. 10 and 11).
(8) Remove clip securing clutch master cylinder
push rod to pedal and slide push rod off pedal pin.
(9) Disconnect clutch pedal position switch wires.
(10) If pedal pin is equipped with bushing, inspect
condition of bushing and replace it if worn or damaged.
(11) Remove clutch hydraulic linkage through engine
compartment.

Its possible the trans input shaft is stuck in the clutch plate or engine crank bush. I have no ready answer to that other than persistence!! Get an exploded view from online or a manual to see if there is anything you've missed. Have you removed the starter? Sometimes there is an intermediate plate between the engine and trans that has hidden screws.

Check the hydraulic clutch operation. This is a clutch master cylinder with a reservoir on the firewall, and a clutch slave cylinder down on the bell housing of the transmission, with a steel tube running from the master to the slave cylinder. When clutch pedal is depressed, hydraulic fluid (brake fluid) is forced from the master to the slave. The slave cylinder should push out a little plunger that contacts the clutch fork lever-pushing it forward to engage the clutch.
Add brake fluid to the reservoir if needed. Watch the plunger on the slave cylinder: if it moves little, or not enough, try bleeding the slave from the bleeder valve. They are bled just like brakes. If bleeding doesn't help, your clutch master or the slave may need replacing. The master cylinder, like a brake master, has internal seals that hold hydraulic pressure, so force can be applied to the plunger on the slave cylinder.

First thing to do is to see if you have a clutch slave cylinder or cable operated clutch. Second the slave cylinder is on the end of the lever that goes into the clutch housing Before you change the clutch make sure that the problem is not in the slave cylinder or clutch master cylinder or cable as the case may be.

No, you don't need to replace the clutch itself.
Don't be surprised if the slave cylinder replacement doesn't fix it.
Could be the master cylinder.

Having problems with the clutch in my 1998 Ford Ranger. There is no freeplay, and it is very difficult to shift. Do I need to adjust the clutch? If so, how do I adjust it?


The clutch is not adjustable,it is a fluid clutch.It has to be a leak,or the slave cylinder,and,or, the master cylinder are bad,It does not have to be leaking to be bad,but it is one of the two.Rate please,thank you.

2001 Ford ranger edge. The gears won't change.


The trans will need to come out. While your at it, just replace the clutch assembly, rear main oil seal, resurface the flywheel, and the clutch master cyl. Its not really a job you should do, find a repair shop to handle it.

You've lost the integrity of the clutch hydraulic system. Chances are that either there is air in the system, the slave cylinder or the master cylinder has failed.

First step is to bleed the clutch. See if that's a fix.

A slave cylinder is down on the transmission and is relatively easy to change (only two mounting bolts, one hard hydraulic line, and an accordion-boot covered plunger). When it's changed out, the clutch needs to be bled afterward. If it's a clutch master cylinder, that's where the clutch fluid reservoir is underhood (next to the brake fluid reservoir, just to the right as you face the front of the car). Removal requires undoing the lines coming out of the cylinder, removal of the locating/mounting bolts/studs, and disconnection of the plunger rod from the back of the clutch pedal, way up under the dash. Once it's replaced, bleeding the system is required, and you also may have to adjust the pick-up point of the clutch by turning the nuts on the plunger rod - it only takes a slight turn to change the pickup point dramatically, so go slow with that.

I'd do the slave cylinder first - it's more easily accessible, significantly less expensive, and quicker to change. If it's not a fix, don't feel too badly about changing it since it's only about a $25 part and it is prone to failure, so at the very least, you've eliminated a potential problem down the road. If the slave is not a fix, I'd change the master.
