98 jeep grand cherokee stalls, backfires intermittently

98 jeep grand cherokee 4.0 stalls while driving and at idle, it also will backfire. After it backfires it tends to run better and the stalling goes away(happy when the backfire happens bcause i know i wont be backing up traffic for a couple days)! Noticed that at about a 1/2 tank and then at about a 1/4 tank the stalling tends to be triggered...changed map, crank, ignition coil,cap/rotor,wires/plugs..issue has been goin on for a few years but i didnt need to drive it due to having a company vehicle...when the problem started the 1st thing i had changed was the fuel pump so i dont think its that...i can go on and on but i'll just leave it at that...love my jeep tho!

Could be a stuck fuel regulator or your cat could be getting clogged up and the random backfire clears it out temporarily. Too you may wanna check the condition of your injectors .fuel filter flow direction.and a possible culprit could be a stuck egr valve

SOURCE: 2005 Grand Cherokee Limited check engine light comes on...

I had the same issue and had to replace my gas cap. It was leaking pressure internally and causing a check engine light.

I have a 97 jeep cherokee that stalls and backfires and it has backfired to the point where it blew open my muffler. It doesn't backfire all the time, just at times...what can it be?

It's not possible to pinpoint, with just online info, what is causing the backfire, but if it blew your muffler open, the engine is definitely dumping raw fuel into the exhaust. Look into what can cause excessive fuel to be dumped into the exhaust and you may find the cause of your problem.

My 98 jeep backfires and stalls out while driving at normal speeds I have replaced exaust a number of times as well as computer have also changed crank sensor.the shop I take it to insists on telling me...

i had a similar problem with a 1998 grand cherokee 4.0 had a no start condition changed the crank sensor the car started idled fine no codes till you drive it then it was giving p0430 p0460 misfire cylinder 4 and 6 and ran rough no speed didnt make sense ran good before sensor went bad removed new crank sensor on the bottom it has a round cardboard glued to it so it does not go in all the way and get caught by the flywheel and break its for the air gap . paper says it will shear off when you start the car problem was it wouldnt let the sensor go in far enough for the proper air gap so when i re-installed the sensor the second time i held it in with left hand tightened the bolt with right hand started the car and it idled fine again but when i drove it it was fine and no codes

I have a 1997 jeep grand cherokee with automatic and 4.0 six cyl engine--it drives great for a day or two then stalls out seemingly for no reason--now tonight it has no spark from the coil--so I feel it is...

Unlikely that it's a computer. Check your coil and the grounds, make sure you don't have any breaks in the wires that could cause an intermittent problem.

1997 Grand Cherokee 4.0, ignition shuts down sometimes backfires and keeps going, or dies completely and hopefully starts up.already replaced coil and crank sensor.

The likely answer to your problem is that you have an intermittent disconnect in the ignition system. If power supply to the ignition system drops out, some fuel still goes through and when power returns it ignites in the exhaust resulting in a backfire. I would look for a bad ignition switch, or other loose connection that could me making/breaking contact intermittently.

Backfire into intake

I'ts quite possible that your distributor is installed one tooth off and is too far advanced, causing the plug to fire before the intake valves are closed completely. Turn it one tooth counter-clockwise and try it again.

get a couple bottles of gas line antifreeze .. if you don't already use it and add it to the gas.
