Question about 1982 Honda GL 1100 Gold Wing

1 Answer

Hardly start; skips badly at low rpm; smooths out some after 3000

Ran fine. Developed rhythmic skip. Found resister in spark plug cap was "open." Replaced and ran fine. Week later developed a skip, checked other resisters, fine. Skip got progressively worse and erratic. Runs like it is out of time. Will barely start. While cranking it "knocks." Will not run below 2500 rpm without full choke. As it accelerates up from 1500 to 2800 it knocks and skips badly. Around 3000 it smooths out a bit and at 3500 up it is a minor skip. Inductive timing light shows fire going to all cylinders.

I had a similar problem and traced it to the hole in the gas cap was rusted shut so that the engine was starved for gas. I drilled a small hole in the gas cap and it runs like new. Sorry-no new gas caps are available through the Honda dealer as the bike is so old.

I have a ford ranger 1986 ive replaced plugs, wires, coil, cap, rotor button and still i have a orange spark could it be the pickup coil

Color of spark is a kinda age-old test, but it doesnt necessarily mean anything. Some cars you will usually see orange during a cranking spark test because the resistance of the system and the coil windings reduces voltage below the "blue" spark level until voltage gets over 14v, which doesnt happen until the engine is running.

If the car runs at idle and rev, it is unlikely its the pickup coil. The pickup is the RPM sensor, pretty much it either works OK or works terribly/not at all (though sometimes they are funny, its rare). If it runs fine for awhile, then after 30 minutes it starts to cut out or stall, and when it cools it runs again, THAT is pickup coil type of failure, but not yellow spark. Pickup doesnt make spark or affect its quality in any way. It simply says WHEN to make spark. After it signals WHEN, the module and coil and source voltage determine how much is made.

If you still think you have low spark issues, id test it with a test plug. Its an adjustable or fixed gap spark plug you can buy at a parts house. You need minimum 25kv consistent spark from the coil.(30 is better). What that means is you hook a work from the cap to the spark tester, and with the engine running it will fire regular sparks and not skip any. If it does...spark is not your problem. Period. If it doesnt, then you start checking wires, resistance, voltage, etc.

What is wrong with my 1996 geo tracker ,it will not start in damp or rain days

but skipped spark plugs. (air and fuel filter ) finish the 60k mile tuneup?????
and are the tips, white, black, oil soaked, green , gas soaked?
shoe drops. but runs perfect other wise

if the 16v engine, says that on top, of valve cover
it has wells spark wells are they full of oil, that is the 60k tuneup
step that calls out valve lash checks and new gasket there.'
if they fill with water or oil , that will make starting hard.
there are 50 more ways, we dont guess, the tests and tools are easy and cheap.
got tools?

hard starts, ? basics.
  • low battery (for 3 reasons) = low spark energy.
  • low compression, skipping the 60k means the cam belt slipped.
  • bad spark , not doing a full 60k tuneup.
  • bad fueling. (too little or too much) "complex set of tests but scan it first"
  • EGR sticking open. clean it.
  • melted cat. (not your's, as it runs perfect otherwise)
  • lots more, i stop.

here is the 60k line up

Oil leaking into cylinder

"leaking into the top of the second cylinder on top of the spark plug wire
only this matter !! cure that.

some engines have spark well. are you saying the wells fill with oil?
if yes, you didnt buy a real valve cover sit, try FELPRO that
comes with the well seals , with kit.
skipping is misfire. if the boots get fill of oil, sure it will misfire, how can it not?

Jeep YJ skips at higher RPM's (4 cylinder)

Just for S & G's check your spark color if you would. It could be the coil is going and not able to fully saturate at higher RPM giving a weak spark. Depending on what condition your distributor is in you could be seeing some spark scatter as well if the shaft is super loose.

If you are clean in first and second becomes a problem it indicates there is a problem under load which coincidently creates higher cylinder pressures which create resistance across the gap of the plug and if you have a weak coil voila ... misfire. As you have changed so many other parts it would definitely be worth looking in to. Also check your engine grounds to be sure none have come loose or broken.

1993 jeep grand cherokee loses power at operating temp.

ever do a real tuneup this decade
spark parts, and filters. that be first
and make sure the hot engine (sized not stated) is really hot.
180F or more, and holds, it must reach normal spec, temp.
or the ECU brain will not do its job right.
the only clue I have here is skips
skips must mean misfire.
there are over 50 causes of misfire.
bad spark plugs tops the list.
and all spark parts there, cap/rotor,wires set this OLD.
car is old , needs a major tuneup

they to forget all that other stuff, and elaborage
what skips means.
i guess never cold does it skip.

taCH DROPS TO ZERO BUT engine not heard to stall?
if yes, electrical problems or CKP failing?
what does engine do when TACH does that, matters big time.

Low compression on cylinder 1 bad skip if you idle it up the skip will go away and also it runs fine while driving

If there is low compression in one cylinder the fault wil be shown more at IDLING as the engine will not be smooth. So there will be reduced power and it might also skip.
In th long run you will have reduced power of the engine even as the engine will not show on higher RPM and thus the fuel useage will be more.
It will be good to check out and estimate to get the compression corrected to all cylinders.

Engine seemed to skip at about 70 mph and service engine light came on. Then seemed to skip several more times at different speeds. Ran fine. Just continued to skip as we drove.

hi the engine is not skipping the problem is the engine is miss firing
that is caused by a bad .spark plug or -wires-or coil pack - when was the last time the
car had a tune up . check spark plug connections

I have a 93 grand cherokee lerado with the 5.2 engine. the first thing to happen is the ignition coil went all of a sudden while driving. replaced the coil and ran great for two weeks then it started to...

How did you determine bad coil? was it not sparking period? I ask because coils rarely if ever go bad... What is the fuel pressure? Are the injectors firing? Spark plugs fouled?
Other sensors to check: Coolant temp sensor? Manifold air temp or intake air temp sensor? O2...These will change your air/fuel mix at temp if they're bad...
