Question about 2005 Harley Davidson XL 1200 C Sportster Custom

2 Answers

Battery Installation I have installed a new battery on my 2005 Sportster 1200 Custom as the old one was not charging. Now, when I put the key in the ignition and turn it, there is no power. I replaced the (30 AMP) fuse - still it doesn't power up. Am I blowing the fuse or doing something wrong?

Thanks for your suggestions... I can't reverse the battery cables since the battery slides in only one way and I know which one os positive & which one is negative :-)

I will check the grounds and charge the new battery. I didn't reakize that the new battery needs charging.

    Thanks again!

If it was working before you changed the battery and now it is not working start going back over everything that you changed. Did you reverse the battery cables? Break a wire? Loosen a ground connection and not tighten it again? Did you charge the new battery?

Go back and check your grounds, they are known to vibrate loose.

I know you know positive/negative,but an 05 1200 battery posts are reversed, and most places, besides the dealership ,sell replacement batteries with the posts on the wrong sides...neg on right, pos on left, when you're sitting on the bike...just double check....check that the terminals are clean,tight,...also check that your security system(if you have one)is off(hold key fob)turning signals will flash

I have a 1980 iron head when I turn the key on my battery drops to 5 volts, any ideas?

Battery needs charging or battery is dead, will not hold charge. If battery is more than 2 years old, you may need new battery.

Turn key on no head light nothing

Kill switch on? Battery dead? Put Battery charger on, bring to full charge, then put load tester on it to check for dead cell/weak battery.

My battery seems to need to be recharged constantly. is this a problem common to the 2005 custom sportster? also, the battery is in a very difficult position to jump off or charge without pulling it from...

Had the same problem in my four wheeler. checked water level in the battery and it was dry. this was from overcharging. Use distilled water if thats the case for you. Other possibility is that charging system on the bike isnt putting out. Once you get it running, when you rev it up the headlight should get a little brighter. Best way to test is with volt meter, voltage should exceed 13.5 volts, minimum. Probably over 14.

My harley 1200c sportser 2004 isnt starting after a new battery was installed. was told i didnt have to charge the battery it would charge itself in 90 mins ,one those fill cell batteries can you help

The cells are full? Check the battery with a volt meter - should read at least 11 volts on the DC scale, to be able to start your motorcycle. If it is at 11 volts, you really need to charge it.

If volts are good, check volts on the starter side of the solenoid with the run switch in the ON position and the key in start position. No volts = bad solenoid.
