Question about 1990 kawasaki GPX 750 R

Starting problems Kawasaki (Engine Type) ZX750FE041703

This engine is in a off road go kart I recently purchased, and I have no experience with 4 stroke motorcycle engines. Believe the doner bike was a early 90's GPX750 - Cam timing chain in center of block.

Problem is that when attempting to start, the engine turns over but about every 10 seconds of cranking there is a loud backfire, nice flame from exhaust and no ignition.

After pulling the alternator off, found that the belt was split, could this create the symptoms above?

Spoke to a local mechanic and he seemed to think the problem was ignition timing, perhaps a sheared keyway - cant seem to locate a manual to assist and the couple of Kawasaki dealers in my area say the motor is to old for them to assist.

Any pointers would be a great help.

Link to following parts manual is a great help what would be a great help from here is a manual. From what I can see the Belt, Generator, part number 59011-1052 could definitely effect ignition timing, just not sure where to start looking, apart from replacing belt and hoping.

Does anyone know of a system diagram that can be used, even if off a similar motor design?

    Appears to go

Starter Motor, Generator Shaft, Generator and crank

From Generator probably the ignitor, coils, spark plugs (timing system)

From Crank to pistons, fuel delivery system.

Questions then are now that I have moved the generator shaft (testing for binding etc), removed the starter motor, if I replace the belt is everything going to be out of whack - if yes what timing marks am I looking for to align to (TDC type setting) or are they irrelevant on these types of motors. Cant see a Computer anywhere, just the ignitor.

Rototiller engine in a go-kart?

Yes. They are horizontal shaft, and the performance (rpm, power, throttle response) of any horizontal shaft 4-stroke engine is going to be pretty much the same. They also have a governor, which you might want to disable or not, depending on the age of your driver.

I have no singnal lights how do i fix them? How low can i go to lower my bike? what type of exhaust do i need to use?

Have you checked the flasher? Uses an automotive type flasher. Is about 3/4 round X 3/4 high with two plug in wires. Probably under the tank or under the seat.

Have you checked the lamps? Front and rear should both use dual fliament lamps. Replace with the same number, available at automotive or motorcycle parts place.

Lower your bike? As in put it closer to the ground? Unless you are an engineer, don't mess with the geometry --- really --- you will put yourself as well as everyone you enconter on the road (including me and my family) at grave danger!!!

Get a genuine Kawasaki exhaust or GOOD NAME BRAND after market exhaust. Check at the Kawasaki shop or popular motorcycle magazine advertiser, FixYa.com advertisers or other web sites including http://www.kawasaki.com/Home/Home.aspx and/or http://www.kawasakipartshouse.com/

My friend, a motorcycle is not like a riding lawn mower. Everything on a motorcycle is designed to be a part of that motorcycle. Every system is balanced against every other system. When you start reengineering without experience or training, you are endangering yourself and others. You can also damage your engine and other systems.

When it comes to motorcycles, 'If in doubt, DONT'.

Please enjoy your classic motorcycle and the restoration project you are involved in.

What year is this kawasaki..jkakxvec1xa

If your in the US. try this website buykawasaki select motorcycles, then owner info, then parts diagrams.Tpe in your engine or chassis no & away you go.
Otherwise contact your local kwaka dealer, quote your engine or chassis no & they should be able to identify it for you.
You didn't say what type of bike or model. Is it an MX bike,a trail bike,a road bike. If its a road bike it should say model & year on the compliance plate. It's on the steering stem,on the frame between the forks.
Hope this helps
