Having a problem starting

Hi there, ive got a kawasaki zx6r ninja from 95
just bought it second hand, as a first bike(dont worry its limited)
i know that i need to work on it a bit. but my problem is the bike will start and run fine, but only if its been sitting either for a long time or a very short time.
in other words itll fire up in the morning, itll fire up if its been of for 2 mins but it wont if its been standing for 10!
and it varies a little too.
thanks

okay, well i have a manual and the tools, i have a couple friends that know quite a bit about it, and i am studying engineering so that shouldnt be a problem.
ive been told this might be a battery problem, that if the bike is warm than it doesnt have the amperage to support the coil. but might it be a faulty contact of something similar?

From the information you have provided it is not possible to give you a definitive answer. If you intend to work on the bike yourself you need three things right away. A manual, tools, and an experienced friend.
A manual so you can see and read about the procedures you'll be performing. Tools so you can physically do the jobs. And an experienced friend to show you how to do the things you don't understand in the manual and help you troubleshoot.

My first guess about the source of your problem would be carburetor issues, but I have no way to know for sure.

Good luck.

I disagree with the battery assessment. Your battery is easily tested though, any auto-parts store can test it or put a multi-meter on it while you crank the bike for a few seconds. If the voltage drops off a lot your battery could be near the end of its life. You can also test your charging system this way, start the bike and rev to about 3-4k rpm. You should be getting about 15v from the charging system. If you're only getting 13, your voltage regulator or alternator isn't working properly.

It sounds like it's something with the carbs. It could be a number of things. Was the bike sitting up before you bought it?

2002 zx6r repair manual download free

Hi, E the vast majority of service, parts fiche, and owners manuals on the internet are "FREE" to download and all service manuals contain wiring diagrams in the back pages. The rest usually charge a modest fee around $10 and there is a handful of obscure, rare, obsolete, and very old models that are no longer or never were available, for these rare occasions I shall look on eBay and find the cheapest one available. Most of the manuals will cover your exact make, model, and year otherwise one will be provided that comes as close as possible to your bike and will have most of the same info that an exact manual would have. If there is no $ sign after the manual link it is free to download for viewing or printing. To download your manual please click on the blue links below. Good luck and have a wonderful day

I have a problem shifting in to second gear on my 2005 zxr6 636

Hi, Robert and the usual suspects are:
1. Clutch dragging slightly.
2. Primary chaincase overfilled with lubricant.
3. Corners wore off shifter clutch dogs.
4. Shifter return spring bent or broken.
5. Bent shifter rod.
6. Loose shift lever on shifter shaft.
7. Shifter forks sprung.
8. Shifter pawl needs adjusting.
9. Heel/toe shifter coming in contact with the floorboard.
10. Transmission oil too heavy.

Zx6r 2004. Bike ran great for two months. Went out to dinner last night and came out to my bike not starting. Trailered it home, started when taking off trailer. Went for a 15 minute ride and parked it....

Hi, Matt it saddens me to inform you that you have to put on your Battery Priest Robe and prepare yourself for the Ceremonial "LOAD TEST" but before you begin, maintenance type batteries must be topped off with distilled Holy Water and all batteries must present their terminals to the battery charging altar to receive the electrical infusion of Holy Ions until they have reached a 100% full charge of 12.5 volts or better.
Below is a quick and easy test to see if your battery is in good condition or needs Last Rites and must be replaced.
1. Start by disconnecting the spark plug cables.
2. Adjust voltmeter to DC volts 20-volt range
3. Place the voltmeter leads to the battery terminals.
4. Turn the run/off switch to run.
5. Turn the ignition switch on and press the starter button.
6. Watch the voltmeter as your engine turns over for 15 seconds.
7. If the voltage drops below 9.5 volts, the battery is faulty and must be replaced.
