Question about 1999 Yamaha V Star Custom
I live in CT and the gas sucks, what started to be a cable tuneup is now this.At fist the problem was i would start the bike , coke it,warmed it, put it in gear go.What would happen is it hesitate then go ,back fire ,run rich ,and when trying to shift from first , if i didnt constant trotle it would shut off.So i returned to the garage. So i did my yearly cheack,i removed gas tank ,empty gas i remove air flow over carb ,i notice that one carb port was darker,i removed k&n air filter notice seeds in it from mice,i air jetted filter then washed&oiled ,cheacked cables & oiled them ,air jetted gas filters both of them ,cleaned the plugs ,and cleaned the carbs, new fuel ,put everything back together.Started it, let it run for 5 min,and took off ,then it ran like above ,half the power on all gears ,like no fuel was getting to it .This is a 1999 v star 650 with 5050 miles on it it belong to my passed away son.It is also been ported with 2/half strait pipes, the plugs have never been changed, also the two fuel filters, the only problem i had with this bike was that one winter when i stored the bike i didnt add fuel additive and the carb fuel cheack value gumed on me,so i cleaned carbs &changed fuel. That was that.FIXED.I am good with my hands but i never touched any ajustment for carbs or rebuild anything i do not know about. I just want the boys bike running again, before i bring it to a shop, maybe it is something i can fix. I LOVE working on that bike.PLEASE HELP THANK YOU BIG PAT>
You need to check all the eletric wires from one end to the other. mice love the plastic coating on the wires, they will eat the coating off which then will cause the wires to short out against each other.
please let me know if this helps.

It is an issue with the air fuel mixture compression ratio and/or the air fuel mix ratio is not correct. Due to this variation in the air fuel mixture you are unable to run your bike normally. You'll need to adjust the air fuel mixture ratio to solve this problem.
Please see this link for the service manual for getting your air fuel mixture right--
