I had this problem. Don't let anyone fool you I went to places that were going to charge me $200. I can't afford that. I could not turn my key and had to start from the solenode. After a machanic opened a part just above the steering wheel it was just a electric connector I have seen when fixing light fixtures that corrected the problem. Sometime there is a bit more to it but get a trustworthy mechanic. Now got to get someone to help me with current problem struts.

How can I disable the door chime which is triggered every time I open the Drivers door of of my 1996 Lincoln Continental?

Its sensing that there is a key in the ignition. You have to replace the switch in the ignition cylinder that senses a key is inserted. Or alternatively access a wiring diagram and cut the wire from the key sensor to eliminate it.

How to install ignition switch on 1996 lincoln continental

Most fords you turn the key to the on position and on the bottom of the steering column there should be a hole in the plastic take a screw driver stick it in the hole there's a little ball bearing in the ignition switch push it in and pull the ignition out at the same time. Also make sure your key doesn't have chip in it if it does you will need the key reprogrammed or have the new switch made to the old key if it has a regular key don't worry about the programming the car will not start if not programmed it will turn over but won't start theft light will flash

If it has been determined that there is nothing wrong with any component of the starting circuit, there may be something wrong with the vehicles anti-theft system.

just press the button to reset it. Per your owner manual. Should only trip in an accident.

WHen you turn on the key, can you hear the fuel pump run for 5 seconds. The pump is in the fuel tank. listen there while someone turns the key on. report back.

I have the same problem. It's the ignition switch actuator rod. I've already went thru the lock and ign. switch, both are fine.
