2001 H-D Road King engine knock

2001 Road King. Replaced battery. Cranked up and heard a significant engine knock. Sounds like a rod knock but can't tell. Oil level is ok. No known knock or engine problems prior to this.

Thanks for the helpful posts. The problem has been solved. I hate to say this, but it was a real false alarm. I could not believe the noise this thing was making I have heard valves and rods knock before and this sure sounded like it. But, I still can't believe it was such a simple fix. A friend of mine who is a Harley Mech from the next town over Stopped by and checked it. When I cranked the bike he looked at the odometer and said, "is this the actual miles" (12000 miles on a 2001). And yes I am a fair day rider. He asked when the last time I rode and I told him it had been a while. He reved the engine a few times and Wa La, the knock went away. Apparently something was just stuck from lack of use, and him reving the engine loosened it. Purrs like a kitten now. Rack this one up to lack of use. Sorry. Thanks for your help.

01road king..probably have 30 to 40 thousand on it...Sounds like cam chain tensioner..about the only thing that will go wrong with your bike. I will assume you have oil etc in it...If you have not been running your bike stupid then nothing mechanical will usually brake on a Harley. Once again I assume its stock. You don't have an oil light on so I'll put my money on cam chain tensioner has exploded or is about to.

For valve train noise try these:
1. Low oil pressure caused by oil feed pump not functioning
properly or oil passages obstructed.
2. Faulty hydraulic lifter(s).
3. Bent push rod(s).
4. Incorrect push rod length.
5. Rocker arm binding on shaft.
6. Valve sticking in guide.
7. Chain tensioning spring or shoe worn.
8. Cam(s), cam gear(s) or cam bushing(s) worn.
9. Cam timing incorrect.

If it is a bottom end knock, an engine tear down may be in order.

2001 crown vic leaks oil and makes knocking sound when i accelerate, what can this be and please dont say rod knock

Can be several things. I want to say spark knock. Don't remember if your engine came with a Knock sensor.

Also stretched timing chain or weak timing chain tensioner. Another term to look at is "valve rattle". This would give you closer to a machine gun sound than other things.

I have a 2000 road king why would the lifters be knocking loud it seems to be coming from the front rocker box

Hi Doc, the OEM push rods on your year and model are non adjustable but you do have 4 options for noisy lifters:
1. with engine at operating temperature do a quick series of 5 throttle revs to 1000 RPM'S below red line.
2. Try an engine oil additive Liquid Molly Tappet Stop Noise or Risoline Engine Treatment.
3. Cut out stock push rods with bolt cutters, remove suspect lifter, disassemble lifter and clean with carb cleaner and compressed air especially under the lifter check plate, reassemble and install, replace push rods with Taper Lite Adjustable push rods.
4. Buy new lifters.
Good luck and have nice day.

I think i have a rod knock. it stalled out when i was driving and there was water over the road but i was told the water pump culd make te same noise also. please email me back

Check the oil see if there is water in it, never really heard a knocking water pump how ever anything is possible. You can use a wooden broom stick to touch to different engine components to try and isolate the noise location. You can't get that stick to the water pump because of the belt I'm sure be very careful.

Replaced battery, bike cranked, after riding 4 miles, just ticks

check battery leads (both ends) , Then make sure battery is charged 100% (verry important) Get out your (Digital) volt meter set it to DC volts Connect leads to the Battery, it should have at least 12.6 v , Watch meter and start engine, if meter drops below 10.0 volts your battery may be weak and will have to be replaced, or your starter is'nt mechanicaly efficient and will have to be fixed or replaced. While engine is running note voltage should be 12.6-13v volts, then rev engine to 3000 RPM , meter should read 13.5- 15 vdc. If not you have a problem with your stator or regulator/rectifier.
