Question about 2003 Honda VTX

1 Answer

Bike backfires and misses.

In April 2009 I purchased a 2003 VTX 1800S. This month the bike started backfiring when I first started up in the morning (temps in the upper 50's) it sounds like in the engine not out the pipes. Since then, when letting off the throttle to slow for a curve it backfires through the pipes. It doesn't backfire or miss alot but I don't want it to turn into an expensive repair due to neglect on my part.
I checked a spark plug and it had oil on it and was black. The dealership that I bought the bike from said the oil and filter were changed when they received the bike but nothing else had been done or checked. I checked the filter--it's a little dirty but nothing major. I am ordering new plugs and an air filter. Is there anything else that I should check or replace? The bike has just over 15,000 miles on it.

Tightened exhaust pipes and added the Sea Foam. I guess the Sea Foam cleaned the injectors--don't really know what it did but the bike seems to be quicker to respond to the throttle which means I like it!!!

    I don't think I have carbs.

    Thanks!

Run some Seafoam through the carbs. Should be available locally at a parts store. Mix with your gas according to directions. This will clean out the carbs, which sound like they are a little gummed up.

run a stringline around the wheels, check wheel alignment, check wheel bearings, tyre wear. swingarm bearings, bent handle bars, fork twist. stand back and see if it looks staight
some bikes will have some throttle effect when turning, if you thottle off, it may drop further into the corner, but check all others first, could be something dangerous

2002 VTX 1800 backfires recelerating

If the bike is fuel injected, the module should fix it. If the bike is carbureted, you don't need the module but you will need to re-jet the carb to enrich the mix.

Backfiring, cutting out and won't start

Sounds like getting hot is the key here - try a better shop. A competent shop should be able to find this quickly. Sounds like a carb issue to me.

1981 Wide Glide Bike is missing and backfiring

open up the ignition cover plate and check the backing plate. it may have come loose and threw the bike out of time.
make sure your plug wires are plugged on tight and the coil wires are secure.
It is most definitely a timing problem.
