Hi and welcome to FixYa,

For an 81, a lot to check. The charging system is not a simple affair. You would need to check the wiring, output of the stator and of course, the rectifier / regulator combo among others. Start with the terminals / connectors of the stator to the regulator.

A wiring diagram would help.

Good luck and thank you for using FixYa.

Bike stalls at idle and under load when hot or cold?

Hi Todd, sure sounds like a fuel problem, since i dont if you have carb or fuel injection lets start with your carb. remove the float bowl and see if there is water in the bottom. if so remove fuel tank drain it completely clean the filter then air blow it dry also mahe sure the line from petcock to carb is not pinched or bent to restrict flow then check your vacuum line to the petcock is attached at both ends and is not cracked max vacuum is necessary to pull the diaphram in the petcock to allow fuel to flow, disasemble petcock and check rubber diaphram for cracks or pinholes. reasemble petcock and check with vacuum gauge to make sure its holding vacuum. put 1 gallon of uncontaminated fuel back in tank and take it for a ride.
if you have fuel injection, check fuel pump pressure sorry i dont have specs on that but call your local service dept and they can hook you up. clean fuel filter then blow dry tank and proceed as above. if none of this helps get back to me and we can try some electrical trouble shooting good luck

Is this a natural gas fueled generator? Sounds like a fuel problem, i would go through the fuel system and find out whats wrong. If its a natural gas/propane unit its most likely a bad regulator or low pressure.

1992 kawasaki Vulcan 750 stops running

Check the intake manifold/s, even a small leak will make it run poor. Being stored for five years then putting it into use, you may have a blocked main jet. Sea-foam is a great product and I would have used that product to store the bike but not to get it running. It is slow acting so it doesnt work like carb cleaner.

Will not run probably carb problem

but somehow never managed to. So now I am trying to sell the thing and I can't get it to run. It ran like a champ before it sat. If it sits for a while it will run for 30 seconds or so and then sputter and die. Then it won't start for a while but turns over strong. I figure it has to be a fuel issue. I put some fuel stabilizer and cleaner into the tank; no dice. I pulled the tank, drained it, put new fuel in it, pulled the carb, sprayed it out good, put it all back together and...still the same. Not sure I have the tools/skill to completely disassemble the carb and soak it. Confused Any ideas of where to go from here? This thing isn't worth much to begin with and probably not worth anything if not running! I can't spend the money on a mechanic to fix it because that would pretty much defeat the purpose of selling it! ,have you checked the air filter? another problem might be a clogged tank vent. try running the bike with the gas cap open and see if that works.,,,

2003 883 sportster wont start

What u are describing is typical of a faulty ignition system, but could also be a fuel problem. I check by removing the aircleaner and rotating the throttle. If u see a nice spray of fuel, thats probably not the problem. Check for a spark at the plugs. I can explain how if you need me to. If you cant see a good spark, U have an electrical problem. I had a crank position sensor go bad on me. Dont do what I did (replaced the battery, ignition, and regulator as part of my diagnosis procedure)
