1981 Yamaha XJ 650 Motorcycle shifting problems

Cant get it to shift up or down, it started with jumping out of gear under load years ago now putting in gear and shifting is almost impossible like the shifter arm is gettig worn and doesn't engage it far enough.

yes I am not sure of the repair and how involved it is and if it could be as simple as removing the side cover and replacing the worn arm if that is what it is. I am a auto tech and I could do the repair myself, just did not want to tear apart something that might be a little more involved and I creat a bigger problem.

Sounds like you already know the problem. Find someone who can rebuild the transmission in it.

You have to pull the motor out, tear it in half, then put it back together. It requires special tools that most auto techs do not possess. I am a Chrysler tech, and I don't have them.

1981 Yamaha XJ 650. Shifts gears, but the gear shifter gets stuck up or down and I have to manually move it back to the middle before I shift again.

try spraying WD-40 or the shaft the shift lever is mounted on most likely the is oxidation on the shaft.

I wanted to know how to turn down the idle on my 1981 XJ 650 Maxim. Every time I come to a stop in first gear the engine races. At first I thought it was the choke. I don't know anything about motorcycle...

hello
if you were to look upward under the carbs, about center between the middle two carbs you should notice a screw with a larger head on it. this is the idle adjusting screw. hope this helps.
