These starters work Likrk by binding a roller which grips the crank shft end to rotate it.. If either the roller or the crank end surface wear too much, the starter will turn without grabbing or slip entirely not cranking over the engine.. Repair soon or serious damage can result.

Starter engages while the motor is running

Hi, William the starter drive/Bendix/clutch is a mechanical gear driven component that engages the clutch pack ring gear to turn over the engine. It has an internal mechanism that allows the gear to turn in one direction and once the engine starts allows the drive gear to free spin. If gear free spins in both directions then the drive gear has failed, it is not serviceable and needs to be replaced. Starting problem virago 535

Hi, Ian_hulatt you have too many things going on for this situation I would call my local dealer or reputable shop's service/parts department and inquire about any possible quick fix, answers, or parts inquiry. If necessary, transport your bike to the dealer or shop and have a professional technician take it for a test drive, if it is in running condition, and give you a written estimate of repairs and answer any specific questions you may have about your problem. The Clutch on some bikes will disengage the starter motor. Yamaha will not allow you to engage gear when the side stand is down. Hope this gives you some idea

The starter setup on those Viragoes are not that bad to do. The only thing I don't like about it is the the pinion gear. The pinion gear is also a clutch. When they get old they can either jam or slip. It sounds like the starter is damaged. Check starting system before installing the new starter. You want to make sure there isn't a short. Replace the little clutch setup too I believe it is sold seperately.

Bike shuts off when putting the bike in gear

Sounds to me to be something to do with the neutral switch. It stops you starting the bike when it's in gear and you havnt got the clutch pulled in. I'd check along those lines.
