Honda sevenfifty 1994 rc42 starter removal.

The starter motor's playing up intermittently not working. It clicks & if i tap it she works. If I unbolt it from the engine to inspect it,will it drop a chain into the crankcase, or does it mesh with a gear? Can anyone help?

No it will not.Unscrew the + from the battery. Then release the positive cable off the starting motor.Use penetrating oil if it has rust.It is very sensitive and can crack easily so take your time to unscrew the bolt. Then unscrew the screws that holds it down and use a screw driver as lever to detach it from the crankcase.
Before you disassemble the starting motor use a magic marker to mark two lines, one at each point that the cases of the motor connect to each other so that you put the cases at their original position. Then open it and renew the carbon contacts inside. Also use compressed air to clean it from the black powder inside.

Hi, I have the same problem on my CB500 and have out it down to a sticking solenoid. Even though there is a click this doesnt neccessarily mean the solinoid is closing the contacts, a gentle tap with a hammer on starter/solenoid frees mine up and she starts fine - for a couple of days then another love tap is required.

Other than replacing the solenoid does anyone know if this is repairable?

yes heres what you need to do check your starters wiring and see if they are dirty and not contacting correctly or if the starter itself is not functioning correctly when dont want to start take a hammer and lightly tap top of the starter and if it starts then the starter needs replaced its brushes are burned out hope this helps

When the starter button is pressed the engine doesn't turn over and start. The bike sounds like it will start briefly and then there is just a clicking sound.

If you press the starter button and it clicks, the starter button is good. If you short across the terminals on the starter solenoid and the starter works, you have a bad solenoid. If you hold the starter button and tap the starter with a plastic hammer and it works, you need starter brushes. Anything else wrong with the starter and you need a new starter .

Starter works intermittantly.push the button &

You need a test light on the starter terminal when it won't start. Attempt the start and if the light comes on, but the motor doesn't, the motor is defective. In that case, remove the starter from the engine and inspect each brush located at the opposite end from the drive for excess wear or weak spring tension that holds the brush in place. Don't rotate the brush 180 degrees when replaced. I don't know if rebuild kits are available--check with a dealer. Hope this helps!
