Rectifier/regulator is for changing the AC (actual current) from the alternator or generator to DC (direct current) for charging the battery and running lights etc... and therefor regulates power DC to 12volts this is to stop blowing fuses bulbs etc...

the cdi unit takes its power from the alternator/generator in the form of 2 pick ups 1 for each coil as the engine turns just like the old style points system just before top dead centre a spark is produced to each cylinder as it reaches TDC (top dead centre) therefor if a pick up in the alt/gen is dirty/faulty only 1 coil is recieving the spark via the cdi unit all components need to be checked
a good trial and error if machine sparks/runs on 1+3 cylinders only take the 2 wires that go to the coil 1+3 switch them with coil 4+2 if machine now sparks on 4+2 fault lies within pick up to that coil

Swap the cdi out for a gsxr250 one and change the coils to CBR250 ones. this will make the bike run better and the CDI last longer.

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

If somehow, the CDI could be opened up, then component level repair maybe tried. There would be 2 final transistors that actually do the switching; 1 for each coil. Offhand, it would appear that 1 of those 2 is faulty. Otherwise, replacement is the only option.

Incidentally, in some versions, a fault in the tachometer could also cause one of the CDI's output to fail.

Postback results of tests.

Good luck and thank you for using FixYa.

Artic cat 400 i started it let it run for 10 minutes and then it died and will not start now is not getting any fire to the spark plug

guessing you changed the spark plug? .. you can fry the coil from heat...I used to wrap coils in rags when I tested them on a coil tester to try to make them break down from the heat quicker. It worked too.

Very weak spark xs400

Hi, Anonymous and the usual suspects are:
1. Fouled spark plugs.
2. Severely discharged or a damaged battery, should have 12.5 volts or better and be able to pass a load test if necessary.
3. Check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
4. Loose connection at ignition coil or plug between ignition sensor and CDI box.
5. Spark plug cables in bad condition, shorting / leaking, spark plug cable connections loose, check for spark leakage in the dark.
6. Faulty ignition coil, pick up coil, trigger coil or CDI box testing needs to be checked with an ohmmeter at 70 degrees Fahrenheit
7. Faulty safety switches clutch, kickstand, neutral, off/on etc.
8. Faulty ignition switch.

Engine shuts down after 2 min - Gsxr 750 1997

Bad ignition coil. You can try to find the OHM specs and test it but that is what happens when you have a failing coil.

My suzuki 1986 gsxr wont start. a few weeks ago i was riding it and it was a little troublesome with the clutch shifting, now it just wont run. it wants to start but it wont. and when it try to start it,...

Hi there!
Too much gas mixture or there maybe plug problems. If it doesnt start, charge the battery and start the bike with new spark plugs. Replace the plugs, this usually works.
Let me know if this is any good. Other options:

1. THe spark plug cable
2. The ballast
3. The jets are clogged
4. Poor fuel quality.

I have a 1986 gsxr 400 just bought it.it only starts the odd time

You should also check ignition, there may be a fault with the coil or ignition generator, am manual would give you basic tests, are all jets clean and clear? Is the float valve letting enough fuel into the float chamber? Is ther good supplies of fuel getting to the main float valve's? Check your spark, it should be ccrisp and fat, and be powerful, ignition systems have so much that can develope intermittent faults, i no your truly in a Nightmare! Good Luck, The Yeti - Hastings

Spark plug order

If you are sitting on the bike, cylinder 1 is on your left then 2,3,4....looking at the coils, the left coil- left lead goes to no1cylinder. right lead goes to cylinder4. Right coil- left lead to cylinder 2, right lead to cylinder 3.
Hope it helps you.
