Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Soon as the problem comes about, check the pulser coil:

  • passive - depending on the manufacturer of the pulser generator, anywhere from 50 to 500 ohms. As long as it is not shorted (0 ohms) or open (no reading), then it should normally be good.
  • active - while cranking or engine running, check the voltage coming from the pulser coil. It would be a pulsating 0.5VAC. It might be to your advantage to use an analog / needle type voltmeter.
Post back result.

Good luck and thank you for using FixYa.

Pull the plug out and test it on the frame. If no spark you need new plugs. If it does spark look at the plug. If the plug is black and wet it is getting to much fuel and flooding. You will need to adjust your carb's air to gas mixture.

Hard to restart when hot. Easy start when cold, runs smooth always. Will restart OK after waiting 10 minutes. Help!

if the spark plugs are black - adjust 2 air screws on the carbs (2 or 2,5 turns out.
OR - sync the carbs
OR - change the air filter

1985 Honda VT 500 C Shadow brake light not working

Hi, Jl45lc before diagnosing any brake light issue always check the bulb and fuse first for integrity a brake light staying on is usually caused by the front brake light switch, which is mechanical, not disengaging. On early models moving the throttle control housing closer to the front brake master cylinder is the main fix. On late models, the switch gets tweaked and needs to be realigned. A brake light that does not come on when the brake lever is applied can be caused by a faulty switch or no continuity in the wiring at the switch. The rear brake light switch is hydraulic and it is extremely rare to malfunction in a closed circuit condition causing the brake light to stay on. Usually, rear brake light switch issues are caused by no brake pedal free play or a sticky rear master cylinder piston. A brake light that does not come on when the rear brake pedal is depressed can be caused by a faulty switch, air contamination in the brake line, or no continuity in the wiring at the switch.

2005 Honda VT 750 DC Shadow Spirit front cylinder not firing

Hi, Bean_75535 you need "FIVE" things in order for a cylinder to run properly:
1. FUEL: in order to validate your not getting fuel spray some starting fluid into the air cleaner and hit the starter button, if it fires up and runs for a few seconds then you know you have a fuel delivery issue. Multi carb banks should be bench "SYNC"
2. SPARK: remove the spark plug and with it connected to the spark plug cable ground the threads to something metal you should see a bluish white spark if not you have a faulty spark plug, spark plug cable, ignition coil, condenser, CKP, ECM, sensor or the wiring in between.
3. COMPRESSION: you must have at least 80-100 PSI for most bikes, multi-cylinder engines should be within 10-15% of each other if not perform a leak down test you may have a burnt or bent valve or hole in the piston or broken rings.
4. CAM TIMING: confirm your timing marks are aligned to see if the cam chain or adjuster are worn out and the chain has skipped a couple teeth.
5. IGNITION TIMING: on older bikes check to see if your points have not closed up, timing plate has not become loose and confirm with a timing light for proper retard and advance functions, on newer bikes where timing is controlled by an ECM and is nonadjustable check you CKP, TPS, MAP, O2, sensor or its counterpart for integrity.

No spark to rear cylinders runs good and then runs on one cylinder 1986 honda shadow 1100

try switching the position of the two coils, the plug wires will unscrew off of the coils and that way you dont have to pull the spark plug wires too,(be sure and change the 2 wire couplers too) if your front cylinder stops firing you know its the coil, if the back cylinder still doesn't fire then your coil is good and you either have a bad #2 spark unit or a bad crank pulse generator.

Back fire to tht cylinder could be due to lack of gas (fuel) in the float chamber..try to check tht carburator and adjust the float.
Hope this helps!

Front cylinder stops running after about 10 minutes

it sounds like a bad coil. they will have good spark when cold, but a coil going bad will break down once it has warmed up.

Carburator adjusting or no gas

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Initially, if there is spark on the plug of the front cylinder, then it would be a fuel issue. Pls try:
  • Rig a fuel bottle to replace the fuel tank;
  • Remove the airbox assembly to expose the carb;
  • Start/run the bike, spray carb cleaner on the open carb;
  • note the RPM or sound of engine. Determine if front cylinder will fire even erratically. You could also try the exhaust pipe if it warms up (pls be careful might be overly hot);
  • rev the bike then cover the carb mouth of the front cylinder with the palm of your hand;
  • there should be a strong suction indicating that vacuum is created when on the intake stroke and intake valves are opening;
  • the palm of your hand should be wet with fuel, if not carb issue;
  • might require a rebuilt.
Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa. Happy New Year.
