If it stay in second and won't shift. Valve body or pump. If it slips/ engine revs up. Clutches are gone. Could be other things also. That transmission is up to 45 years old.
there are only 3 issues here.
1 weak engine, , even 1st gear I have no engine power.
2: 1st revs normal but wont shift up.
3: the transmission slips. (flares) RPM goes nuts.
Tranny most likely shot. I believe yours is a T-5, I had the same issue years back but in 3rd gear. Usually the clutch going out is a gradual thing. So I would have a tranny shop look at it. Maybe find a cheap rebuilt tranny for ya.Look online or a trusted shop.
not sure if it will make much difference but there are sensors on the trans that can be bad and you really have no way to tell it. or a wheel speed sensor or could even be a dirty clogged trans filter but I am leaning more towards the sensors. I can bet when they rebuilt the trans they just reused the same sensors and thats why you still have the same problem
theres locking pins that hold it in gear that kind of resemble a door latches it`s my guess that there springs are no good and they just are staying open allowing it to slip back out of gear.
the neutral safty switch tells the comp. what gear is in. when its not working the light wont move and the car will not go threw the gears prop. the switch is nown to go out. it is located on the tranny or down under the shifter
Are we referring to a manuel tranny or automotic? If its a manuel tranny, you have a bad syncro in the transmission. This would require a complete tranny tear down.
