The main jets just unscrew out use a socket if you can but dont over tighten when refitting.undo the 4 screws holding the carb bowl on and the jets are straight in view.

Hi, Johndunnifa and the usual suspects are:
1. Fuel cap or fuel tank is not venting properly.
2. Fuel filter clogged.
3. Fuel line pinched or kinked.
4. Float needle and seat sticking.
5. Float level too low.
6. Carburetor bowl vent line clogged/blocked/pinched.
7. Idle adjusting screw set too low.
8. Air/fuel mixture screw set too lean.
9. Idle port, transfer ports, slow air jet clogged.
10. Slow fuel jet clogged.
11. Faulty fuel pump.

1995 Yamaha XV 250 Virago Is there a need to adjust the choke (start) cable? If so, how is it adjusted. I think I'm having a problem with my choke and was planning to replace the cable and starter...

The problems with a plunger style choke happen when the rubber on the bottom becomes deformed and does not seal or the spring does not push the plunger down hard enough, or the cap breaks so the plunger is not pushed down hard enough. If you put your finger over the hole and the bike runs properly your bike is running on choke. You have to block the hole deep inside the carb to shut off the choke. I assume the original problem was that the bike would not idle .If this is the case, take the carb apart remove the slow jet and clean the jet and the carb body out so fuel will flow at idle. This should fix your no idle problem.

Have a 250cc yamaha virago its been standing for a while the problem is it starts ok but wont idle but runs well at high revs?

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Almost always, your described problem indicates clogged idling jets. Stale fuel causes varnish like coating which must be removed. This then calls for a carb pulldown, disassembly and soaking non-rubber parts in carb cleaner. In the exploded carb diagram below, the idle (pilot) jet would be # 20.

Good luck and thank you for asking FixYa.

I have a 2002 yamaha virago 250 that has set for awhile and I am pretty sure the jet is clogged how do I do this and how easy is it.

YOU MUST REMOVE THE CARB FROM THE BIKE. YOU THEN TAKE THE BOWL OFF THE BOTTOM OF THE CARB TO ACCESS THE JETS. REMOVE THE JETS AND INSPECT. CLEAN IF NEEDED AND REINSTALL IN REVERSE ORDER.

Won't idle without choke

The pilot jet controls the air/gas fuel mix at idle . If the jet gets plugged up not enough gas gets to the emgine at idle. You will need to remove the carbs and float bowls and clean them, paying special attention to the pilot valve. Count the number of turns to remove the pilot screw and replace the same number of turns then turn counter clockwise 1/2 turn.

A “very helpful” rating for this answer? Thanks!
