There is a rattle in the top end at highway speeds seems to vary with engine load, few years ago i put a new head gasket and replaced the cam chain guide, thought that would take care of it but it was still there and has always been there, any ideas?????
it doesn't effect the bikes power, if you let of the throttle a little you can make the noise go away or quiet down and if you give it throttle you can hear it also.it doesn't effect the bikes power, if you let of the throttle a little you can make the noise go away or quiet down and if you give it throttle you can hear it also.
What would be the symptoms of a weak valve spring besides a rattle noise?
I adjusted the valves when i rebuilt the head gasket and there is only a slight valve tick, i would rather have them a little lose than too tight, my noise is a louder metalic noise. Thanks for your help!thanks for your help on my 650 special!

does it affect the bikes power? it could just be that chain, my chain has more play than I liked but it was supposed to be rite, my shadow had a lot of noise similar to what you described, I had several different mechs and a dealer all come up with the chain, but my thoughts were on the bearings any( and I mean any) play and at high rpm's & the top end would vibrate due to the balance variable

Have you adjusted the valve lash lately? With engine COLD.... Valve Clearance Intake: 0.11 - 0.15mm ( = 0.004 - 0.006") Valve Clearance Exhaust: 0.16 - 0.20mm (= 0.006 - 0.008") 29mm shim kits with a wide range of sizes are available from aftermarket dealers. (motion pro shim tool works great) Also a weak valve spring will cause the valve to "float" and make a rattle noise...as well as excessive camshaft end play. Make sure your valve train is getting proper lubrication. Good luck....i hope this helps

You still have a leak somewhere! It could be the Head Gasket/Warped Head, Intake Gasket, Timing Cover. Have a Mechanic look at this before you cause severe and costly damage.
It could be something as simple as a vacuum line, but sounds fuel related. Possible pump.get a fuel pressure reading done and if pressure doesn't hold.....suspect fuel pump
seems like you are having turbocharger problems the rattling may be coming from your turbocharger as well as the smoke may be the oil which the turbo its burning as it touches your hot manifold, hope this helps you .
you have a bad head gasket or a cracked head better off to replace engine with a lower mileage motor its better to do and maybe cheaper.the reason i say this is because when you rebuild the top end the lower end becomes the next victim when put up against a newly rebuilt top end.
These vehicles are historic for head gasket problems. Ford had issued a recall because there where so many problems. The new head gasket is a different material than the original. Cost to replace varies by shop and geographic location, plan on around 1100 bucks.
some cars have this problem when the intake manifold is loose or drawing air or the roteror cap may be defect, to check your manifold ,with a cold running moter spray a bit of starter spray (with eather) along the intake manifold , if it's leaking the moter will increase in rpm.
Sounds like you blown head gasket, white smoke indicates steam,so there is water getting into engine, this is caused by blown head gasket or crack in cylinder head.
