Hooked battery up headlights when on car wont start clicking

Headlights do not draw much power and will go on easily. However, once you try to start the car, I imagine the lights dimmed greatly and you just got the clicking. This is the starting solenoid engaging the starter gear but not starting the car. Not enough power in the battery. Enough to turn the lights on, not enough to start the car.
The battery either needs to be charged more (or fully) or it needs a load test to check whether it can even hold its full charge (auto stores do this for free).

Whining noise when extreme cold days, that goes away when my 2005 Mariner warms up. Seems to come and go until the car warms up.

Alternators can sometimes whine when start up on a cold morning, they run on full load till they get the battery back up to full charge. When the whining stops, switch on electrical equipment (Headlights, fan full boost, heated rear window) if the whining starts again its the alternator.

Wont start. wont even crank.

Do you have power at the starter terminals ?
Could be something between the starter and the key switch such as the neutral safety switch.

71 nova wont start!

If it cranks with a jumper battery, its probably not the starter.
You need to know if the battery in the car has a full 12 volt charge, and if the small wire from the battery is powering the fuse box and key switch. Then you need to know if the power is getting from the key switch thru the neutral safety switch and to the starter.
When you say the car is dead, do you not have headlights when the engine is not running ?

2002, VW golf 1.9 SE ... all electrics on dash ,confused ... wipers, indicators and headlights !!

Sounds like there is a faulty earth connection somewhere. Start with the battery negative and work your way round.

My aprillia mojito 50cc headlamp won't work

Hi, Anonymous if your headlight is not working the first thing to check is the headlight bulb for damaged filaments then check your light circuit fuse, that being said the usual suspects are:
1. Faulty ground or power supply to headlight bulb socket.
2. Faulty hi/lo beam switch.
3. Faulty ignition switch.
4. Fuse is good but no continuity on both sides.
5. Faulty wiring between battery positive and headlight bulb socket.

Headlight won't work; all others do

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Initially, suggested checks using a testlight (preferably, rather than a voltmeter) with the ignition switch ON:
  • +12 on either the white or the blue wire from the headlight dimmer switch to the headlight bulb/socket while engaging LO/HI switch;
  • if no +12, check voltage on blue/white going to the dimmer coming from the start button switch;
  • if no +12, check black/red wire coming from the 10A fuse in the fusebox going to the start button switch.
  • if +12 on the black/red but no +12 on the blue/white, faulty starter switch.
Not to confuse you, the starter switch has an internal mechanism that switches off the headlight when starting. This is to ensure that the starter motor gets all the power from the battery.

Good luck and thank you for asking FixYa. Happy Holidays.

Car will not start when key is turned to start position Battery is at Full charge and the idiot lights come on what is the problem I think it is a faulty switch but I'm just quessing, would that be a...

Turn ON headlights and try to start car.

Headlights stay lit, no change in brightness means an open relay.
Start car in Neutral, or move gear shift in and out of Park and try to start in Park; otherwise it is the ignition relay switch or the starter solenoid.

Headlights dim slightly: Low battery charge

Headlights dim significantly or shut off completely: Battery cable connections are really dirty. Remove cables from battery and clean cable clamps and battery posts. You may not need to boost to start.

Hope this helps!

Bike wont start unless the headlight fuse is removed

Check the ignition switch.  The headlight power runs through the ignition switch, and this turns off the headlight when the starter is engaged, which provides full battery power to the starter without the load from the headlight.  If there is damage to the starter button, it may be shorting out and causing the problem.
