My 1996 ford big bronco has been sitting up for a few months. the other day it drove fine but when i put it in 4 wd low it didn't seem to engage. now it's in 4 low but won't come out and won't shift from 1st to 2nd gear. also, my 1992 2.4 l 4 cyl nissan truck will goes to 4000 rpms or even near red-lining before changing from 1st to 2nd gear. HELP- I'm in the transmission twilight zone with no way to get out!
Ford : back the truck up 10ft put truck in neutral and disengage four wheel low. (You can't drive in four wheel low cause its a pulling gear and you won't do over 3-5 mph.)
Nissan: start truck see if it idles normal. If so rev motor and check throttle for sticking and check EGR valve make sure its not stuck open or malfunctioning when you drive it..
Change your transmission fluid, sounds like varnish has built up and keeping the valve body from operating properly or the clutch housing from moving freely. Word of caution - after you change the transmission oil it could very well have enough sludge build up to stop the new filter up very quickly. After you change it make a short drive and if you experience any signs of it beginning to stop pulling stop it immediately and change the filter again. By it sitting it probably has formed a high amount of varnish in the transmission and will stop the filter up quickly and will also cause it to hold the gears longer. I burnt a transmission out of a Grand Marquis without realizing my new filter was stopping up, it had been sitting for an extended period of time also. Now it's something else, maybe washing machines?
