Question about 1986 Honda VT 250 F

1 Answer

Front cylinder stops running after about 10 minutes

I'm loosing the spark when the engine gets hot. I have checked most on the electrical system (I'm a electrician by trade). Coil looses its supply.
I have swapped the two ignition units over and they are identical, it still the front cylinder not running.
I presume it must be the pick up in the engine for the front cylinder?
An Idea how to test?
What the wiring colours are for the front cylinder.
Very annoying as its a trike and the engine is very hard to get to.

    Hi Wiz,
I thought that, but the supply voltage to the coil disappears when the fault occurs.
I have another engine, with about 3K miles on from new. I will meter out the pick ups and swap them if there is any doubt later..

It sounds like a bad coil. they will have good spark when cold, but a coil going bad will break down once it has warmed up.

I have a 2000 dodge Durango when it gets hot I have to wait about 10 to 15 minutes before it starts can't find the problem

Start with an error code if any read at your favorite auto parts store. How hot does it get? Possible so hot (cooling system problems) that the block sensor feeding the ECU is telling it there's a problem. A kind of safety system. Double check all cooling system components. Is the Water pump ok, or belt slipping? Battery and electrical system ok?

Your front cylinder is not running. This could be due to spark or fuel, or lack of compression.
Check for spark first by inserting a good plug in the plug wire and holding it against the cylinder. If it shows bright spark, you may have a fueling or compression issue.
Check for compression, should be around 150psi. If you have spark and compression, you probably have a fueling issue.
Check the carb for the front cylinder for fuel level in the bowl. If the fuel level is correct you have another carb issue which will require removal and cleaning/servicing.

Engine stops for no reason after about 10 minutes of mowing. If I wait 10 - 15 minutes it will start again and run about 10 minutes then die again.

Try running the mower with the gas cap loose or removed and see if it runs longer. When it goes to die, does it spit and sputter or does it just die? Also, please look on the side of the engine for the engine model number. I need that number and not the mower model number.

Oil is fine, runs fine for about 10 minutes then bogs down and dies. Let it sit for 10 minutes it will start again and run fine for another 10 minutes. Used to be 20 minutes, then 15. The cooler the...

It could easily be an electrical issue, or not. Get a spark tester (hooks up to the spark plug). Pep boys, Autozone, and Napa all sell them for less than $10. Check for spark when the mower has quit. If no spark, most likely need to replace the ignition module. Also check the flywheel key, if it is has been sheared or even knicked, the engine will run hot.
If you still have spark when engine has failed, check the vent on the gas cap. A clogged vent will cause a vacuum to form in the tank and stall the engine.
Good luck!

Next time you get it warmed up, check the compression on the front cylinder when it quits. Be careful of course since it will be hot. It is possible that you are losing compression when everything heats up and expands, but it comes back when the bike cools.
