Question about 2000 Harley Davidson XL 1200 C Sportster Custom

1 Answer

01 1200 custom sporty, cuts out while riding comes and goes

When accelerating a bit harder than normal the bike has a bit of a miss fire. From time to time the bike also cuts out while riding and then before even pulling off the road takes again and rides like a dream. Almost like running out of fuel. (have checked the full tap and it was open)

Buddy you have to get your bike to an authorized service personnel to tune your air filter and fuel screw since these are like lungs and heart for the bike.any self adjust of these things may lead to unwanted consequences.(mostly get your carb cleaned since even moisture or water wash may caused water to enter the carburettor)

Miss fire after up to temp and runfor short amount of time. I get a miss fire coming to a stop..drops to cylinders or 1. will not accelerate at all boggs with miss fire.

Check your tank vent. Ride the bike until it stalls, pull over and pop open the gas tank lid. If you hear a "ffffwwwwwah" of air being sucked in when you open the tank, your air vent is blocked. The bike runs great when you start out, but as fuel is taken out of the tank no air can get in to replace it and the tank develops a vacuum.

I have a 92 sporty 1200 & it miss fires & it turned the exhaust pipes yellow from the excess heat. is there a voltage rectifier on it that went bad?

If it's misfiring and running hot, this has nothing to do with a voltage rectifier. It sounds like you've got an extreme lean fuel-air mixture for some reason. They do come from the factory jetted very lean due to EPA regulations but if you've got a manifold vacuum leak, it will cause a misfire and the engine to run extremely hot. I'd check the manifold seal behind the carb, the vacuum hose fitting on the backside of the carb, and the gaskets where the intake bolts to the head. If the slow jet is a #42 jet, I'd go up to a #45 and put a 0.020" thick washer under the needle to raise it just a bit to erichen the mid-range mix just a tad. That is if the bike still has the stock carburetor on it.

Good Luck

1998 Sportster XLH 1200 seems too smoky. Carb, including jets were checked - ok. Not visible smoke, but just gives rider that exhaust smell even after short trips. 14 k miles and recently serviced. Is this...

Is this a recent development? Or has it always left that smell? I had an older Sporty, that I ran too rich for years, it left lots of black soot on the inside of the exhaust tips, and a very pungent exhaust smell on your person. When I went down a couple jet sizes, it got much nicer, and ran a little better as well.

No start sporty

It could be the ignition key switch..They are the number one thing that goes out in these bikes,,Check for power on the side that comes out of the key switch,,Make sure you have power going in and coming out..If no power out then suspect bad key switch...

Misfiring 2000 sporty 1200

Try replacing your plugs with Autolite's. make sure to get the right size for your bike. See if that makes a difference.

318ti M44 acceleration problem

Have someone handy to press the gas pedal for you after the engine has warmed up well; best if driven.

While you listen at the exhaust pipe, have your helper increase the revs slowly and note whether the exhaust note changes to a hiss, instead of the sound of an engine firing.

You may have a decayed catalytic convertor and when they come apart inside, they can clog mufflers and resonators (the second, smaller muffler).

I've had this happen on more than one car and when it happened on a Fiat Strada years ago, since the routing of the system was fairly straight and made of heavier gauge stainless steel, I fired two shots with a .357 magnum into the tailpipe.
Never had another problem with it.
