Question about 1992 Honda NSR 250 MC 21

NSR250 MC21 92 Not hitting power band, fine until around 7000rpm

NSR250 MC21 Not hitting power band, fine until around 7000rpm.
I have just got the bike and am not sure of the problem the bike runs great until around where the power band should kick in? the bike has had a recent top end rebuild by the previous owner and seems in good nick.
How do i check the power valves are working, i previously had a rz250 Yamaha and when you switched it on you could hear the valves move up and down when you turned on the ignition. The nsr dose not make any noise can any one tell me if it should?
Thanks David Roberts

Power valves on different 2 strokes operate differently. A yamaha version does a self diagnostic because its a cylindrical type, so cleans off excess carbon. The type that the honda uses is a butterfly type and so a diagnostics / cleaning action is not performed on start up, but does require cleaning @ the recommended service intervals. See NSR-world.com for further info.

Since it has had a recent top end o/haul, the problem could be there. Ask the previous owner what / who worked on it. Possible causes could be dirt in the carberators / flooding / incorrect plumbing / or cables to the power valves connected incorrectly.

If it has an aftermarket derestriction box (Under the passenger seat cowl) , that too could be faulty.

Not familiar with your bike but some bikes have electric controlled power band an some have mechanical.Electric ones usually do a quick self diagnostic on start up hope that helps

If your coil packs have been failing this can also make the cat fail. I have heard of many instances of this happening. Get an emmisions test done. If the cat has failed dont pay mazda price get one of the net for the fraction of the price which is just as good

Poor running suzuki gsf 650

hi m8,, 1st u need to check the timing with a time light gun,, and trottle the bike to 7000rpm, and see if the timing marks change as u r pointing the gun at it, if they do move ,,adjustment is needed, ,if all is ok u can do a test by taking a plug spanner with u,,and riding the bike up the road, trottle it to 7000rpm,and soon as it stutters hit the kill switch and coast to a stop,, wipp a spark plug and check the colour of the plug, ,u have to look at each plug tho,, if one plug is different colour to the others ,,then the cylinder that plug came from is the problem point,,, another solution is to get your carbs balanced ,,id advise u do this 1st really b4 doin timing check,, cheers
