Question about Harley Davidson Motorcycles
I have a 2006 Sportster 883. It skips some when you first give it gas, pulled air cleaner off and gave it gas it skipped and fire came out of the carb right behind the slide, any suggestions?
a 6ya Mechanic can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.

your problem suggests bad gas(water) or ecm(engine control module) problems, have a cycle in the shop last month acting the same way replaced ecm after draining the fuel and seeing the gas had no water in it check gas first good luck.

I had a similar problem and traced it to the hole in the gas cap was rusted shut so that the engine was starved for gas. I drilled a small hole in the gas cap and it runs like new. Sorry-no new gas caps are available through the Honda dealer as the bike is so old.

Sounds like you have a vacuum leak somewhere. When you're "on the gas", the manifold vacuum is low and therefore won't **** air from the outside. But, when you "let off the gas", the manifold vacuum goes way high and if you have a leak, air will be sucked from the outside causing one or both cylinders to run lean and misfire.
I'd replace the intake manifold seals at the heads and the seal at the carb. while you're there, check the vacuum hose that goes up to the VOES switch and to the backside of the fuel petcock. Good Luck.

tune it up with new spark plugs and wires if so equipped? Under higher rpm loads, the coil may be cutting out on the voltage as it gets hot.

The carbs have to be jetted. If they are the slightest bit out, it will backfire, burn your eyeballs from the fumes and skip and sput like crazy. I found the Dyna-Flow adjustable kits work great, the should have one for your bike, I found one on ebay, because after going to Italy (Ducati) and getting the factory setting jets put back in the bike, it still wouldn't run. I took those carbs off 20 times, the first time took me an hour, I can get them off there now in 10 minuets. Anyway, the adjustable jets work great, it fired right up and ran perfect the first time. Still running great. I am sold. Check them out.
