When timing my Toyota pickup 1992 what is 5 degrees before to dead center


Hi,when you put the timeing belt on the cank pully is at the 0 mark,wich is (T,D,C)top dead centre,now the other timeing you are talking about is called the ignition timeing,wich is when the spark ignites the fuel and air in the cumbustion chamber,this is why the ignition has to be set 5%(B,T,D,C)before top dead centre.
wright first inline the top dead centre 0mark back up on the crankshaft pully,then take off distributer cap and undo securing bolt so that distributor can turn,
the rotor arm should be pointing at the number one (H,T,L)high tention lead,now slowly turn the distributor anti clock wise,then slowly turn the distributor clock wise,now as it comes up to the number one h,t,lead it should spark,when it sparks tighten the disributor bolt back up,right it should start up and run maybe not to good but it should run,
now buy a timeing light where you can put the 5% into the timeing gun itself,so now put the earth and positive on the earth of the battery and the clip onto the H,T,lead start the car again and point the strobe light from the gun onto the 0T,D,Centre markthe mark should freez every time the light flashes on it ,undo bolt on distibutor and ajust verry slowly when you are happy that the mark is lineing up propperly then I think thts job done.

Crankshaft pully bolt removal


Crank pulley bolt tightens clock wise and loosens counter clock wise. You will need a puller to remove the balance as it has a keyway to hold it on.

Trying to remove crankshaft bolt. How Do I hold the Crank from spinning? Car won't start hoping timing belt didn't jump.


What I use is a chain wrench. It is a small chain about 16 inches long hooked to a long steel handle.
I believe you can find them at plumb shops ect.

Remove water pump


Disconnect battery earth lead. Do not turn crankshaft or camshaft whn timing beld removed. Remove spark plugs to ease turning engine. Turn engine in normal direction of rotation (unless otherwise stated) Do not turn engine via camshaft or other sprockets. Observe all tightening torques. Remove engine, remve RH engine mounting. Remove auxiliary drive belts, water pump pulley, crankshaft pulley, timing belt upper cover, timing belt lower cover. Turn crankshaft clockwise to TDC on No. 1 cylinder, slacken tensioner bolts 5 & 6. Move tensioner away from belt and lightly tighten bolts. Remove timing belt. Remove water pump and replace with new one. Suggest to replace cambelt as well.
Installation
Ensure timing marks aligned3 & 4. Fit timing belt in anti-clockwise direction, standing at crankshaft sprocket. Ensure belt is taut between sprockets on non-tensioned side. Slacken tensioner bolt 5. slacken tensioner bolt 6. Allow tensioner to operate. Tighten tensioner bolt 6. Tighten tensioner bolt 5. Turn crankshaft on turn clockwise. Ensure crankshaft sprocket timing marks aligned 4.
Slacken tensioner bolt 5. Slacken tensioner bolt 6. Allow tensioner to operate. Tighten tensioner 6. Tighten torque: 20 - 26 Nm. Tighten tensioner bolt 5. tighten torque: 20 - 26 Nm. Apply thumb pressure to belt at middle. Approximately 5kg. Belt should deflect to 1/4 of tensioner bolt head width 7. Belt tention can also be set using burroghs (BT-33-73F) tension gauge 10 at middle. Turn crankshaft 90 ° anti clockwise. Check belt tension is 9.5 16,5kg (engine must be cold). Install components in reverse order of removal. Fit cranckshaft pully. Tighten crankshaft pully bolts 8. G4-J: Tightening torque: 12-15Nm.
G4-N/G4-k: Tightening torque: 10-12Nm
G4EA: Tighten crankshaft pully bolt 9. Tighten torque: 140-150Nm.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable (both on diesels).
  2. Release tension and remove the drive belt.
  3. Disconnect the wiring harness at the plastic connector.
  4. Remove the output terminal nut(s) and disconnect the output cable.
  5. On diesel engines: loosen, but do NOT remove, the alternator bracket-to-engine bolt.
  6. Remove alternator mounting bolts. Note any shims or spacers in the assembly.
  7. Carefully remove the alternator from the engine.

To install:
  1. Position the alternator on the engine. Be sure to install any shims or spacers.
  2. Install the alternator mounting bolts and tighten to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm) for 2.5L and diesel engines, 30 ft. lbs. (41 Nm) for others.
  3. Connect the electrical harness. Connect the output cable and tighten the nut.
  4. Install and the accessory drive belt and check tension.
  5. Connect the negative battery cable.
  6. Check the alternator for proper operation.
Tensioner must be moved to loosen belt
Use a socket and breaker bar to rotate the tensioner and remove the serpentine belt. (see pic)

The big nut spins counter clock wise. you have to put your pulley bolts back on and make sure they are tight. leave belt on so that you have more resistance to pull against when tring to loosen the nut put a bar inbetween the pulley bolts so it won't slip off and then loosen that big nut looking thing and you should have it from there. to the same thing in reverse order to install it
