Won't start I hava a Poulan model 2000 16" saw. It won't start. I found the fuel line broken and replaced it. Now I see fuel in the line but still won't start. Wanted to look at the spark plug. Pulled the boot off,a bare wire remains coiled around the plug but I can't see how the cable was making contact with the plug. Perhaps I need a new cable?

OK, I have done as you suggested, including putting in a new spark plug. However it still doesn't start. Any more ideas?

I fooled around a bit with choke, no choke, throttle, no throttle etc and finally it started! I'm not sure but I think it started when I didn't have it choked. I used it for several hours. It does stall frequently but I could always restart it. Should I try to up the idle speed to prevent stalling?
    Thanks for your help Dwain.

The cable is part of the ignition coil. The 'bare' wire you saw is the spark plug terminal that has a right angle bend in the end that sticks into the cable. You pulled it out trying to remove the cable off the plug, Those kind of connectors fit tightly and it is better to pry up on the bottom of the boot when removing plug wire. Pull the coiled wire connector off the plug, slide the boot back and with pair of pliers, squeeze the connector back into the cable, in a different spot. Slide the boot back and put it back on the plug.

First I would remove the plug (carefully, lol) and blow out the cylinder to make sure it wasn't flooded. Replace plug and squirt a small amount of fuel directly in the carb. If it starts for a second and dies, I would replace the carb. Give that a try and let me know.. Dwain

I'm not sure when it stalls, but if it's when you first give it gas, try turning the adjustment screw nearest the engine counterclockwise about 1/4 to 1/2 turn (or more) while 'goosing' the throttle to see if it revs up any better.

Check the fuel filter, air filter and muffler for plugging. Make sure the carburetor fasteners are tight. Does the primer bulb fill with fuel after several pumps? Hope this helps!

Replacing gas line

Your fuel lines are routed like the schematic below. I suggest you replace the filter, all hoses (2 different sizes), and the purge button (bleeder).

I am reasonably sure the upper most carburetor connection (it bleeds any air in the carburetor, air rises) goes to the primer. Leave the hoses long enough to swap them and try it. They can be shortened once you verify the correct routing. Good Luck. HTH

Fuel Line Replacement by SmallEng.com

  • The filtered hose from the fuel tank connects directly to the carburetor input connection.
  • If the saw is equipped with a primer, the output line from the carburetor connects to the suction side of the primer bulb (once the bulb is collapsed it draws fuel from the tank through the carburetor to refill the bulb as the bulb reinflates).
  • The pressure side of the primer returns any excess fuel to the tank as it is depressed.

Find a model number that matches your saw.
Fuel lines run from the tank to the carburetor to the purge pump and back to the tank. Take extensive notes and a few digital photos as you go are a good idea.
