Question about 2010 Harley Davidson FLHX Street Glide

1 Answer

2010 flhx battery fully charged but starter drags bad then clicks. Jumped power from car, still does the same thing.

Push started, ran fine but volt gauge showed 16 volts while running. Rode home about 20 miles, tried to start, turned over slowly then just clicked, tried jumping, still the same.

Hi Anonymous, perform the following tests:
1. Fill acid type batteries to proper levels.
2. Charge battery overnight at 1-2 amps you need 12 volts or better after charging.
3. Make sure all connections are clean and tight especially the negative cable at both ends.
4. Hook up volt meter to battery and start engine, if meter falls below 9.5 v replace battery.
5. With engine running at 3600 RPM battery should read 14.3-14.7 volts if not continue tests.
6. Unplug voltage regulator from alternator at crankcase by front of primary cover.
7. To test voltage regulator go to: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F8EjV0IjW9Q
8. With ohm meter, one lead grounded, touch alternator pin meter should read infinity, if not replace stator.
9. With ohm meter, both leads touching alternator pins meter should read 0.1 to 0.2 ohms on 1989 and later models. 0.2 to 0.4 ohms 1988 and earlier models, if not replace stator.
10. With volt meter set on AC scale, both leads touching alternator pins meter should read
16 to 20 volts AC for every 1000 RPM'S 1989 and later and 19 to 26 volts AC for every 1000 RPMS. If not replace rotor. Good luck

SOURCE: 2006 FLHTCU won't start, battery is good. It goes

It sounds like you've got a bad battery. Sometimes a battery gets what I call and intermittant short inside the battery, A battery is made up of six two volt cells. If one cell shorts, the battery is now a 10 volt battery. But depending on which cell shorts, the battery could become a 4 volt battery.

How old is the battery? If it's over two years old, buy a new one. If not, take it to an automotive parts house and have them load test it. Even then it may no show up. I have a battery that would not start the automobile it was in after I shut off for five minutes after driving over a hundred miles. I had it checked several times and it always checked good but would leave me stranded one time after the next. I finally bought a new battery and that solved the problem. Batteries are funny sometimes but when your ride won't start, that ain't funny. Harley Davidson offers a very good GASMAT battery at a reasonable price now.

The next time it does this. When the clicking starts, notice the headlight. If the headlight is out, the battery is bad. If the headlight is on, replace the starter relay. A one inch cube that energizes the start circuit located under the seat or on the left panel of the bike.

SOURCE: Rode 30 miles turned off ignition, tried to start

Sounds like you had a cell in the battery short out temporarily. We call this an "intermittent short". Take the battery to an automotive parts house and ask them if they can test the battery for you. If the battery is over two years old, they are subject to do this. The reason, vibration mostly but on some bikes like the Softail that has the battery in the middle of the horseshoe oil tank, heat is a factor as well. Sometimes an intermittent short will not show up in a load test. If it continues to do this, I'd just replace the battery.

The reason I say this is if one cell shorts, the voltage of the battery drops. How much it drops depends on which cell shorts. The battery is made up of six 2-volt cell wired in series. Depending on which cell shorts the voltage out of the battery can vary from nothing to 10 volts when the cell shorts.

Good Luck
Steve

Have somone hold the start button while you measure the voltage across the battery. If it is less than 11 volts, then the battery is bad.

Starting problem

Hi Anonymous, and the usual suspects are:
1.Ignition/Light Key Switch not in IGNITION position.
2.Engine Stop switch in the OFF position.
3.Discharged battery, loose or corroded connections (solenoid chatters).
4. Bank Angle Sensor tripped and Ignition/Light Key Switch not cycled to Off and then back to Ignition
5. Starter control circuit, relay or solenoid faulty.
6. Electric starter shaft pinion gear not engaging or over-running clutch slipping.

Letter C... Then starting issues?

Check the output voltage of your alternator by starting your car and place a voltmeter to your battery's + and - ... it should read 13.5-14.5 volts, or if your car won't start, have it tested at auto parts store (they will do it for free usually). Im pretty sure your alternator is ok, but it does need checked. If your voltage is within range (give or take 0.5 volts), then you need to check to see if your battery is taking charge. You can have it tested at autoparts store as well, but if your car does indeed start, and your testing it this way, turn off vehicle and let it sit for 30 min. Check battery voltage. It should read 12.5 to 14.5, (no lower than 12.5v) If your battery reads low, then it is refusing to charge and your battery is bad. If your battery reads fine, then you can run this test of your other starter components this way:

1. Make sure your battery is fully charged.
2. Check connections from battery to starter relay.
3. Make sure you have voltage going to the start side (small wire) of the relay with the key in the "start" position.
4. If you don't have voltage going to the start side of the relay (small wire) with key in the start positon, then your starter switch is faulty (under dash usually mounted on top of steering column).
5. If you have voltage to the start side of the relay (small wire) with key in start position, and it don't click when trying to start your car, then the starter relay is bad.
6. If your starter relay clicks, but engine don't turn over, then the starter is faulty.

Relay under seat of 2008 flhx is clicking when i turn ignition switch on

Hi Blazeschoppe, when you are trying to diagnois anything in the starter circuit you must start with a fully charged battery of 12.5 volts or better and will pass a load test of 9 volts or better while cranking the engine over and the cable connections are clean and tight especially the negative cable at both ends. If you suspect a faulty starter relay just swap it with your horn, brake, or system/fuel pump relay, if the bike starts with no problems replace the bad relay. Good luck

This question refers to a computer problem? It seems to be the power train computer module(PCM) or could I be wrong? It just doesn't start .. It's been 20* degrees out (average) when it started happen

When your starter just clicks its a sign of a dead battery usually ,, When a starter just clicks theres not enough volts to turnit over.. ,, Possible causes are dead battery, altenator not fully charging. bad terminals. or a bad ground wire.. did you try and charge the battery up to full and try it.. another problem can be the starter it self bindinginside.. id try and charge battery fully and try and start it.. PCM has nothiing to do with it.

EXPEDITION WOULDN'T START, JUST CLICKED. REPLACED BATTERY AND IT STARTED. NEXT DAY SAME THING. REPLACED THE SELENOID. STILL JUST CLICKING. WHAT NEXT?

I would have to say it's the starter itself. When you replaced the battery it most likely had enough power to turn the starter which is probably dragging. If that is in fact the case, I'll bet that it starts fine when jumped.

My daughters 2006 chevy cobal wont crank the battery is fully charged . i tested the batteryit has 12.75 volts at the battery and at the jump start terminal under the hood i also connected a fully charged...

Sounds like the starter itself has gone bad. If you can access it easily you can try to jump across the solenoid. Use a jumper wire from the hot lead to the exciter lead. If your not comfortable doing that DONT. Im pretty certain your starter is bad.

Battery dead. Jumped off and it started but won't

TRY THESE TWO THINGS
1) WITH THE JEEP RUNNING AND A VOLT METER TOUCK THE BATTERY TERMINALS YOU SHOULD GET 13.5 TO 14.5 VOLTS
IF SO THE ALTERNATOR IS FINE
CHECK AND SEE IF ANY OF THE WIRES ARE IN BAD SHAPE FROM THE BATTERY TO THE STARTER IF OK THE NEXT ITEM WOULD BE THE STARTER COULD BE GROUNDING OUT
