Are you wanting to know about the ignition switch or ignition key cylinder? The ignition switch is under the dash on the steering column. Unplug the connector;take out the two 8mm screws; lift it away from column and pop out ignition switch rod. Put bark in reverse order and adjust.

Boy that sure looks like the steering column harness that hooks up to your multifunction switch, ends up to the left of the steering column underneath the dash.

The steering wheel lock pin is probably not falling into place. Try some lock lubricant and jiggle the wheel back and forth a little bit. If that does not do it, you will have to take out the lock tumbler and free-up / lubricate the steering column lock pin mechanism.

Something is stuck in the ignition switch

You will need to remove the steering wheel as well as the fairings around it, refer to a Haynes, or Chiltons manual for details on how to accomplish this.

Key wont come out of 1997 GMC Jimmy ignition

Go to auto wreckers and replace the console shifter unit (stick, base, and all components) there is a small solenoid on the side of the stick at the base which is malfunctioning thankfully it's made by chevy so there is no dealer cure under several hundred dollars. I went to an auto wrecker got the whole unit for $50 bucks (price will vary depending on area and wrecker) 6 bolts later and a couple clips and i had fixed it, 8 months later still no problems.

1997 GMC Jimmy sometimes will not start

I had a similar problem several years ago on my 97 Jimmy. There is a switch in the steering column that had gone bad, had to be replaced and no problem since. The symptons sounded just like yours. My trusted mechanic found the problem after a lot of testing and fixed it.
