Hi Anonymous, $200-$300 P&L and the engine should be ok. Good luck.

How much does it cost to replace the idle control valve on a 2004 f150

I just did one on a customer's truck. The IAC [idle air control valve] for this truck is about $160 for the part. Expect to pay $20 -$30 for labor. Prior to buying a new valve, I would try removing your existing valve and cleaning it with aerosol carburetor cleaner. Buy a new gasket [under $5] with the cleaner, as you will need to replace the gasket when you re-install the valve. If you have more than 150,000 miles on your truck, cleaning the valve will probably be a waste of time.

1996 SL1 after engine overhaul oil is having to be added regularly. Rings replaced, valve seals replaced, valves ground and reseated and head pressure tested by machine shop, head gasket replaced, timing...

Depending on how long since the overhaul, and how much oil is being used, you may not have any worries.
Engines built in the factory are within very close tolerances. Engines rebuilt in the shop are not.
So like it was 50 yrs ago, your rebuilt engine may need some break-in time to wear in. The piston rings have to seat or wear into the shape of the cylinders, and so on.
Most of the time you can expect to use some oil for the first few thousand miles then it should stop. You have to drive the car at various speeds and not under much strain for the first thousand or so.
After the first oil change at 3,000 oil consumption should drop off to normal.

I am considering buying a used 2000 VW new beetle (88k miles, $3200). The seller says that the head gasket has just been replaced, and that the mechanic said the engine will make the knocking/clunking...

All nonsense in my book

Buy a vehicle not over 3 or 4 years old
& never over 30,000 miles & try to pay cash
& forget the collision insurance

That is the correct way to do it

Of coarse i have been at this 47 years
& can do my own repairs & money isn't
an issue

Amount of time expected to do a head gasket, water pump on a 97 olds achieva 2.2?

I'd expect to pay anywhere from 8-12 hours of labor. A head gasket is a tremendously time-consuming job and takes a lot of work. You'll also be paying for other parts (intake and exhaust manifold gaskets have to be replaced, new coolant, new oil since both are drained before the job starts), and if you're doing a water pump, bite the bullet and do the timing belt, timing belt tensioner, accessory belt(s), and thermostat as well - those are normally done with the water pump and there's no sense in paying the labor twice.

Head gasket blown. What is approximate cost to

  1. Many internal engine problems, such as a blown head gasket, cracked head or cracked piston, can be repaired without having to replace an entire engine.
  2. Potential
  3. While taking the time to replace an engine may seem labor-intensive and costly, it will add years to a vehicle's life and will save a car owner from the cost of having to buy a new car.
  4. Benefits
  5. Taking a car to a mechanic and replacing an engine with a used engine can cost between $1,000 to $2,000 for parts and labor.
  6. Solution
  7. Car owners interested in replacing their engines with new ones can expect to pay anywhere between $2,000 to $4,000.
  8. Speculation
  9. For those interested in doing the engine replacement themselves, purchasing specialized tools needed for the job is a cost to consider in addition to the price of a replacement engine.

What kind of life expectancy can one expect to get on new gas engines these days[in kilometers]if properly maintained.Have just purchased an 09 Sierra pickup with the 4.8 liter.

Don't go over 5000 miles. The oil life monitor will say you have 50 % (Approx.) but if you use it to 100% you will be way over due for an oil change.

The system uses rpm and coolant temperature to calculate the oil life, so if you don't drive very far the system will not calculate it correctly.

If the head gasket is starting to go, the the water gets vapourized inside the engine. The water level will go down, sometimes you get white smoke from the exhaust, the car consumes more fuel and has less compression and performances.

If you are lucky, and you check the water you can drive a car with bad head gasket for many miles, before it blows completely and leave you on the middle of a motorway.

If the head gasket is starting to go better to fix it or to replace the car.

The part costs only thirty pounds or so here in UK, but the job is expensive, as you need to take apart the head.
Here in UK you dont pay less than four hundreds pounds, probably a bit more, depending on the garage.
