Question about 2005 Harley Davidson XL 883 Sportster

1 Answer

Fast idle after change of exhaust

We have just changed the baffled original exhaust to a non-baffled exhaust which now makes a wonderful noise but the engine idles extremely high when cold (for about 10-15 minutes) Can this be rectified?

Sorry, I meant to say not as simple as adjusting the screw. Any thoughts if it's fuel injected? Thanks again.

Ok, fuel injection...Removing the baffles could cause the exhaust pipes to become more free flowing. This would help the exhaust flow more quickly past the O2 sensors (in theory) causing the sensor to read a lower amount of oxygen (since there is less time to sense it, remember all of these components are made to work a certain way, and that certain way is the stock application. ANYTHING you do to change it throws the whole system off. This in turn could cause the ECM to subtract fuel, resulting in a biased lean condition. From my experience, a lean condition will cause an increase in RPM like you've mentioned. Think of a small vacuum leak. Now the bad news. Setting the idle speed on fuel injected bikes is a dealer function. They have to use the digital tech (special laptop computer) to set the idle speed and the ECM maintains it from there. The dealership can do this while you wait.

Strech, thanks very much for that advice, extremely helpful! Much appreciated. Next stop is the dealer.

Not sure when the Sportster went fuel injection (it was later than the big twins), but if you're still running a carb, there should be an IDLE SPEED adjustment screw, that does as the name implies.

Also, when changing to a more free-flowing exhaust, it usually leans out the mixture, so some adjusting of the carb's idle MIXTURE screw, and rejetting is commonly needed.

changing the air cleaner is like installing a stage 1 kit, if you have not replaced the exhaust but plan to, do it before you have the ECM redone.

SOURCE: engine light comes on when i open up throttle

You will have to get a service tech to attach a scanner and read the trouble codes. They should be stored in the computer memory. It should give you a starting place to diagnose the problem.

SOURCE: Clacking noise at different engine idles on my Yamaha V Star

Lots of bikes make a clacking in the transmission , especially when cold at idle. Basically the engine accelerates and decelerates between each piston firing, and you hear the backlash in the gears slapping back and forth. Without hearing it I can't say for sure, but find someone else with a similar bike and see if it sounds the same.

The code is for the sensor 1 bank 2. That would be the O2 sensor closest to the bulkhead before the catalytic converter. As far as the buzzing noise, I'd make sure all of your grounds are good, and if they are, I'd look at the alternator having electrical noise where a suppressor is needed.
Make sure the idle "kick up" is operating. This sensor idles the engine up so that the A/C doesn't drag the engine down.

How to take baffles out of standard exhaust?

Inadvisable. The stock exhaust system and the engine jetting / calibration are balanced for the best"compromise" performance. Removing the baffles will change the exhaust pressures and upset things. It may sound more powerful because it will generate more noise but that's all. If you want a better sound AND better performance change the complete exhaust system and have the induction system matched to the new pipes.

GE dry is making a noise like loose change is rolling around

There may be change rolling around in it.
Remove the top. Take the screws out of the drum baffles and remove the coins from inside the dryer drum baffles.
When replacing them, tighten them well to help prevent coins from getting in there.
