Try a multi meter across the battery, much more than 14v engine running, and you will probably need a regulator.
The stator will produce 40-50v AC between any pair of the three same colored wires(probably yellow or white)
Make sure the battery is good and not shorted, and jumping off a car battery can put strain on the bike electrics as it will accept more amps the the bike can produce.

I have a 1980 suzuki gs1000 g. clutch?

Drain the oil and install a new oil filter. Dirty, gritty oil can make a clutch act this way. After the oil change , ride the bike for an hour or so. Now drain the oil a second time. Doing this will flush most all of the grit from the engine.

FYI > Go to the site below where you can see a parts diagram for your specific bike. You will select the actual brand, year, model, etc., once you go to the site. Part numbers and prices are also shown. You can order parts from this site. In the event no price is shown on a particular part, the part is not in stock. www.babbittsonline.com/pages/parts/viewbybrandand/parts.aspx
