I had this same problem its the teeth on the bottom of the speedo take your front tire off be careful with your brakes slide out the axle then just turn your front wheel to one side and the speedo wiil fall out I am willing to bet that the teeth are broken on the end they are made of plastic if you want something a little more detailed just drop me a line at j.rberrios@yahoo.com

SOURCE: I have no idea on how to change the speedometer

You'll need to open up the dial cluster, and look for a couple of thin wires leading to the backplate behind the speedo-face. They should be connected to a removable fitting, either screw, pull, or turn it out, and the bulb should be there. Good luck, it shouldn't be a very hard job though!

SOURCE: Speedometer stopped working on my 97 sportster

Your speed sensor is probably bad, common problem. It's oblong, located near the starter, has one screw holding it in and has a length of shielded wire that goes to a connector. Replace. Can only be tested by replacing with a known good component.

Electrical issue

Sounds like a poor connection at the battery or alternator. You need to make sure there is no corrosion or faults in these connections. If there is no fault there then you likely have a ground problem. Find your engine/Chassis ground, make sure it's tight and again free from corrosion and fault. Leaking battery acid can eat wires on the possitive and ground causing issues. Also if the car has been in an accident it could also have damaged or lossened the ground.

How to fix service code #u1097 on a 2005 fxsti

My manual is for a 2008 FLHRC, but it might be close enough for you.
U1097 is "Loss of Speedometer Serial Data"
The fixes are:
Check for loose/broken wire (light green/violet) between terminal 2 of speedometer and terminal 5 of ECM
If not the problem, replace speedometer.

sounds like a possible bad ground wire, you will need to find out where these 3 items ground and see if they have a ground point in common.

Speedometer needle is stuck behind the pin

Here is how it happens, The positive battery cable was loose, after adjusting the battery cable the speedometer needle went under the retention ping.
How to fix it:
1- remove the positive battery cable
2- have a person to look at the speedometer needle
3- Make the battery cable to touch the positive terminal of the battery (this will make the needle to jump over the retention pin)
4- Tight cable again.

If the speedometer is not working, try replacing the cable from the back of the speedometer to the engine or the transmission.
