Question about 1974 Yamaha DT 360

1 Answer

Removing Engine barrel

I am trying to remove the barrel of a old (1980) yamaha DT 250 engine. I've got the head off and removed the 4 nuts holding the barrel to the block. It doesn't want to move despite being gently tapped with a rubber mallet around the sides. I've also squirted some penetrant into the 4 barrel nut holes hoping it may loosen the barrel.

Get a block of wood and put one end on the base of the cylinder then smack the block with a real hammer. Is the piston frozen in the cylinder? It may require a smack or two to begin to free it up.

Go to the site below and you can see a parts diagram. You will select the brand, year, model, etc... It has the part numbers and prices.

Please rate this as a top answer when the cylinder comes off. Thanks!

How do i get to the piston on a 2003 wr 250f

You need to remove the fuel tank and then the engine. You then remove the top head by removing the four bolts holding the head and cylinder jug on. slide the jug upwards off of the piston. To remove the piston you will need to separate your case

HI, I have a Suzuki LT80, it starts ok but it smokes like hell and there dosnt seem to be much compression what could this be? thanks.

It seems you have worn rings and/or barrel and piston. You will have to get the barrel off the engine to ispect. Unbolt the carb and exhaust from the engine. Unbolt the 4 nuts on top of the head. Remove the head and barrel from the engine. Inspect the piston for scoring and wear. Remove the piston by removing the circlip next to the gudgeon pin. Do not drop the clip into the engine.(stuff some clean rags in the engine under the piston. The gudgeon pin can now be pushed out of the piston and the piston removed.Have the barrel and piston measured for wear.
If you're on a tight budget you can replace rings only but this is a penny wise pound foolish solution. You'll have the same problem in 2 months time.
It is best to rebore the barrel and fit an oversize piston and new rings. The barrel can also be resleeved but this is a more costly option and should only be exersized if you cannot obtain an oversize piston.

I have a 1974 dt 250 same as an dt 360 the bike has sat in a barn about 4 yrs it will not start removed and cleaned the gas tank went thur the carb new plug used ignition coil compression about 50 to 75...

Compression is too low!

Replace the piston rings.

Also check continuity from engine to frame till high-tension coil...
Check if breaker points aren't dirty ( clean out with fine sandpaper )
Check breakerpoint settings
