Your 2003 Sportster should have been equipped with a vacuum operated petcock unless someone has changed it out. This is highly likely since the factory units were very prone to problems. To drain the primary, look for a pipe plug underneath the primary at the very back underneath the area of the clutch. Refill with one quart of H-D 20W50 SYN3 engine oil or any other suitable lubricant.

Have been asked to do a oil change on a Harley Davidson 1200, evo year 2004, not like other Harelys , dont no where to start


If it's a 2004 1200 Evolution, it must be a Sportster. To change the oil, look on the right side of the bike below the battery tray. There is a hose with either a plug in it or it plugs onto the frame somewhere behind the primary cover. Take the clamp off and remove the plug or pull the hose off the dummy frame part and the oil tank will drain. Refill with three quarts of oil.

If you change the primary/ transmission oil. the drain is underneath the rear most part of the primary. Remove the plug and drain the primary. Refill with a quart of oil added at the primary chain inspection hole.

I need to due an oilm change on a recently perchased '88 sofrtail with 5 speed and belt drive.what do I need to do?


Find the oil drain. It's located below the transmission on the frame behind the exhaust pipes. It may be a hose with a plug in it or the hose my plug onto the crossmember of the frame in that area. If it's in the crossmember, the drain plug is underneath the crossmember. Remove the plug and drain the oil. Replace the oil filter with a new one. Refill the oil tank with three quarts of 20W50 oil. Check the oil after your run the engine long enough to get it to normal operating temp. There are two marks on the dipstick. The top mark is "FULL HOT" the lower mark is "FULL COLD". Do not overfill and check the oil with the bike on the side stand.

To change the oil in your primary, Look below the rear of the outer primary cover way back where the clutch is loctated. Drain the oil and remove the derby cover. Stand the bike straight up and refill the primary with H-D Primary Lube. Fill the primary until the level of oil is just below the lowest portion of the clutch spring in the clutch pack. Do not overfill as the clutch will drag and you will not be able to find neutral position in the transmission with the engine running. About a quart of lube is sufficient.

The transmission drain is a pipe plug on the right side of the transmission. Drain and refill with 20-24 ounces of H-D transmission lube.

Your bike originally came from the factory with H-D Syn3 synthetic 20W50 engine oil in all three areas.

Yes it does. It should take about a quart of oil in the primary. Some primary covers have an oil level indicator hole at the very back of the primary just bit above the lowest point. The drain plug is underneath the primary. If you have an "oil level plug", remove it and add oil until it comes out of the hole. If you can't find a level hole, drain the primary and refill with one quart of oil

Just need to know how to change Engine, Transmission and Primary


There are two drain plugs on the bottom of the transmission. One is the engine oil and the other is the transmission. Drain the two oils from there. The primary oil drain is a small pipe plug underneath the lowest part of the primary drive cover.

The engine holds three quarts of oil, the transmission holds 20-24 ounces of oil, and the primary hold 36-42 ounces of oil. Fill the primary until the oil level is just to the bottom of the spring in the clutch assembly. If you get too much oil in the primary, the clutch will drag and you will be unable to find neutral with the engine running.

I think you can find the oil drain on the left side of the bike down low on the frame right behind the engine. It's a large diameter hose that plugs onto a stub on the frame. Some are located just below the battery tray and some are lower on the frame down by the rear of the primary case. Drain the oil, change the filter, refill with oil, and you're ready to go.

If you want to change the transmission oil/ primary oil, the drain is underneath the bottom of the primary at the very rear of the primary.

Three quarts of engine oil and a quart of primary/transmission oil.

How do I change all my fluids on a FLHTC 2005


There are three areas that you have to service, engine oil, primary oil, and transmission.

To change the engine oil, underneath the transmission, you'll find two drain plugs. The drain plug nearest the left side of the engine is the the engine oil drain. Warm the engine a bit and drain the oil. Change the oil filter. This is a messy job so put something down to catch the oil as it runs out of the filter. Replace drain plug and refill with oil.

The plug nearest the center of the transmission is the transmission drain. Remove the plug to drain the transmission. Once drained replace the plug and refill the transmission through the transmission fill hole in the chrome cover on the right side of the transmission.

To change the primary oil, underneath the primary outer cover very near the rear of this cover is a small drain plug. It takes a Torx wrench to get the plug out. Remove the plug to drain the oil from the primary. Remove the derby cover over the clutch. Refill with oil through the derby cover hole.

Your bike probably came with H-D Syn3 oil. You can replace the oil with this or any other oil as long as it carries a rating for use in a diesel engine. Here, it must have an API code of "C", example "SJ/CG4". Four quarts of engine oil, Add three quarts of oil and check. Fill to proper level with the fourth. Your dipstick is marked with a "Full Cold" and "Full Hot" mark. Fill to "Full Cold" mark and check again after warming up the engine.

Use Syn3 in the primary or 30 weight oil, 40-44 ounces. With the bike standing nearly straight up, the fluid level should be to the bottom of the clutch spring, large black disc in the center of the clutch. It's a diaphragm type spring.


Use Syn3 in the transmission, 20-24 fluid ounces. Check with the dip stick again with the bike standing straight up.

Need information on the changing of engine, primary and transmission oils on 2006 883L sportster


Drain the oil tank by taking the hose loose that plugs onto the frame on the left side of the bike right behind the engine down low. Look underneath the engine and you see a small plug that screws into the primary cover from the bottom. This plug uses a Torx wrench to remove it.

Change the oil filter. This is a messy job as oil pours out of the filter as you unscrew it from the engine. Install the new filter and tighten. Add three quarts of oil to the oil tank of the engine and one quart of primary/transmission oil to the primary. The primary and transmission are lubricated by the same oil. I think the later model bikes came with Syn3 oil in both places.

Gear box and crankcase oil amounts


You have THREE oil 'compartments' on your particular year&model bike.

(1) The ENGINE OIL
---( which holds 3 to 3.5 quarts or liters of oil).
---On the right side of the bike, and at the rear of the ENGINE OIL TANK, you should notice a Hose that is connected to the oil tank. Follow that Hose downward.
The other end of that hose will either :

----A: Be connected to the bottom of the frame,
OR
----B: Have a Metal Plug in the end of the hose. That 'plug' will be held in the hose via a hose clamp, and also will be secured to the frame via a 'clip' that is actually part of the frame).

-- IF(A): the Hose leads from the tank and is attached to the frame, you will notice a hex-head plug (that also has a hex-cutout in it's center for insertion of a hex or allen key) underneath the part of the frame that the hose is attached to. Remove/Unscrew that Hexplug from the frame to drain the engine oil.

--IF(B): the hose that leads from the Oil Tank has a "HosePlug" that is inserted into the end of the hose, remove that plug to drain the engine oil.

*Removal of the Enging Oil DIPSTICK, located at the mouth/fill area at the top of the Tank will aid in a faster flow of oil from the tank. When done draining, re-install the drain plug.

-When changing the engine oil, also remove and install a new Oil Filter.

*Put in no more than 3 quarts/liters of oil into the Engine Oil Tank.
*Ride your bike for min. of 10 minuets, then park and shut down the engine, wait for about 2 minuets, and check the level via the Dipstick. Proper oil level will be at or just below the 'FULL' mark of the dipstick.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
(2) The TRANSMISSION OIL:

On the right side of the motorcycle, the
TRANSMISSION OIL FILLER PLUG/DIPSTICK is located on the foward facing side of the Transmission End Cover. The Trans End Cover is the cover that the Clutch Cable goes into. The Trans Fill/Dipstick has a Hex/Allen cutout in it for insertion of a hex/allen key to remove it.

The Trans DRAIN PLUG is either located either:
A: -Located on the Transmission Case, JUST BELOW the Trans End Cover. If here, the "Drain Plug" will be a TORX fastener. Remove that Torx fastener to drain the Trans Oil.
OR
B: -Located UNDERNEATH the Trans Case, in between the two Shock Absorbers. If here, the 'Drain Plug" will be a HexPlug that is the same type drain plug as described earlier for the engine drain.

TRANSMISSION OIL QUANTITY is as follows:
** 600 ml. for a 5-speed transmission.
OR
** One Full Quart/Liter for a 6-speed Transmission.

******Use the Trans Dipstick to verify that the level is correct. Between the FULL and ADD mark, or at the FULL mark.

ALSO NOTE: Drain, and Check your Oil when the bike is level. Have a friend assist you if needed. You don't want the bike falling, and/or landing on you.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
(3) The PRIMARY OIL

Located on the LEFT SIDE of motorcycle, the PRIMARY HOUSING connects the Engine Crankshaft TO the Transmission Output Shaft via a Primary Chain, which is lubricated by an oil bath.

(Make sure the Engine Run/Stop Switch is in the STOP or OFF position).

Remove the DERBY COVER (the Large round cover, with 5 Torx Fasteners. With the bike level, you should note that the oil level come to approx. just past the bottom of the Clutch Basket.

The Primary DRAIN PLUG is located: either at the

(A) Left Face of the Outer Primary Cover, below the Derby Cover.
If so, it will be a TORX or HEX/ALLEN fastener. It is NOT the same as the Hex/Allen fasteners that surround the Outer Primary Cover securing it to the Inner Primary Cover.

OR

(B) Located UNDERNEATH and ON the Outer Primary Cover, just below the Derby Cover area. It will either be a HEX FASTENER, or a Torx Fastener.

-Remove the Drain Plug to drain the Primary Oil.
-Reinstall the drain plug and fill (thru the Derby Cover Area) with ONE QUART/LITER of PRIMARY OIL.


****** BE SURE to clean and coat the threads of each Drain Plug with Teflon Paste thread sealant. NOT THREAD LOCKER.

****** BE SURE NOT TO OVER TIGHTEN THE DRAIN PLUGS.
